Yesturday i was at a very busy petrol station, i had took my lid off because it was an esso garage and they get fussy and placed it next to my bike i then filled up. Noticing the large que of cars i thought i would be polite and pushed the bike to the side(about a metre and a half) i then turned round to pick me helmet up to see the car who had been watching me the whole time i was filling up drive straight into my helmet. The helmet was pushed with his bumper and then rolled over, the helmet is cosmetically damaged but because of the speed of the car i doubt it has damaged it for use. I shouted at the car driver (who was italian and didnt speak much english) he said his insurance would sort it out and we exchanged details. Should i just wait for him to get back to me or do i have to contact anyone?

Hi

Insurance should cover it, but if it is non UK insurance you will probably have a nightmare claiming. If it is UK insurance then he would be mad to loose his no claims / excess for the cost of a helmet.

All the best

The other drivers policy will cover you for damage they cause with their car.

Hi

Still think he is mad, what with the excess and trying to get next years insurance.

You should get a decent amount if the helmet is reasonably new.

All the best

Moral of the story is to hang your helmet over the mirror on the bike Wink

People tell you not to, but the last time I left my helmet on the ground next to the bike the bloody thing fell off its stand on top of it. (was my brand new Arai, first time out!) My thinking had gone, "don't hang it on the handlebar, it might fall off" Doh!

I always hang my lid on the mirror nowadays.

Instead of the replacement value of £170, you'd probably get the current, depreciated value, which depends on how old your helmet is. Best bet is to get him to pay it himself, as his excess is probably more than the £170 anyway. And, tell him from me: "Ma come cazzo si guida? Non si guarda più avanti? Li mortacci suoi..."

I don't see how you can quantify the price of somthing that should not be bought second hand tho.

it's a bit of a quandry Smile

I never take my helmet off at the petrol station - if they insisit I do then I drive off and never go there again.

Next time make the cars wait - do you think they would have moved to let you fill up?

I agree with you mate, until you've been out for awhile and your mirrors covered in flys! yummy!!!, then I leave it on the floor tight into the bike so no Muppet kicks it.

Yes, 'Hang it on the wing mirror'.....unless like me your ZXR has wobbly rubber/flexible fittings for the mirrors!!

A mate of mine bought an expensive lid for car racing a few years ago. He got it home, took the box out of the boot and the lid fell straight out of the bottom of the box and onto the tarmac!
It might have been OK until he hoofed it around the close in a fit of blind rage. He still uses it, probably fine for mini racing though....

I bet the first thing you get from his insurance is a claim for damage to his car caused by you leaving your lid on ground.

I don't take my helmet off while filling up.

There's usually nowhere safe to place your helmet in the pump area of the forecourt.

Aside from getting run over, if you put it on the ground, you're exposing it to contaminants (fuel and water) and dirt. The tops of pumps are often not large/flat enough and can be dirty/wet too.

Mirrors are dirty as mentioned above.
