The last couple of days I've worn glasses instead of contacts. Didn't think much about it until I got to the first T junction that wasn't 90 degrees to the main road, I just couldn't see what was coming down the road without stopping and turning to take a look instead of the normal glance. I find with my glasses that theres a dead zone to each side. My journey to work means that I have to go through about four of these junctions and I feel a real divvy stopping and looking around when there is obviously (to everyone else) no cars for half a mile.

how do those who always wear glasses cope? Any tricks? Or do you always stop?

Just stop and make sure, and turn my head further. Wear an open-faced helmet with contacts and you'll be shocked at how good the visibility is compared to a full-face helmet.

Get back to those contacts asap!!!! I hate wearing glasses full stop and just can't get on with them anywhere outside the house let alone in a helmet - Guess sometime i'm a bit of a "mirror mirror on the wall... who is the fairest of the all" Laughing

The only answer is contacts or laser surgery but I can't have that until i'm 25. (and even then...its a bit drastic isn't it?) For me it wasn't just the lack of peripherial vison, but also I found that at speed you tend to drop your helmet down to tuck behind the screen. This means you are looking slightly up and if wearing glasses are looking over the top of the lens and everything is blurred! Thumbs Down

I've been doing a lot of welding lately and its better for me to wear glasses than contacts. With glasses theres less risk of arc eye, not sure about contacts, I heard a rumor that they can stick to your eye if you get flashed without your mask down Shocked .

Being a lazy sod I can't be bothered to mess about with lenses more than twice a day, and I'm too old and ugly to be vain about it Laughing

Like McHaggis said you need to turn more but I think its become a habit to just turn enough which is why it feels so uncomfortable. I only ever used an open face once, I got caught in an hail storm and couldn't see 2 feet in front of me Thumbs Down God did that hurt! never again mate!

Mine are disposable and I only have problems if they are in for too long and my eyes get tired. I find that making yourself cry helps, try dropping your bike at the end of the journey Twisted Evil . Or try looking in different directions without moving your head, stops the lenses sticking.

I wear disposable's too. Find them much easier as you just throw them away. Also greatly reduces the chance of infection as all the bacteria is removed and put in the bin, not allowed to breed overnight and put back in the eye next morning...

They shouldn't do. My eye's are quite dry so I've had the tear ducts plugged, which sorted that out. In fact sometimes they can be a little too wet, but rather moist than gritty Thumbs Up

Are your's dry, you will know if they feel like someone's thrown sand in them in the morning when you first wake up Shocked

If not then chances are you are overwearing them.... You are meant to leave them out at least one day (or two half days) a week to allow your eyes a rest and get some oxygen. If you fail to do this the blood vessels will start to grow towards the centre of your eye (this is bad). Once this happens then even the slightest stress will cause them to go bloodshot.

I too am a fellow speccy and I find that contact lenses are nowhere near as good a specs (actually visual improvement here).

I suppose I'm used to riding in them now.

Years ago I tried contacts and the problem I had were that my eyes streamed with tears all the time. Might try some more modern lenses some time.

Can happen, but seems to happen virtually never. And the mask does not prevent it.

All the best

i have very dry eyes natrually apparently, my optition suggested when i wear my lenses to put eye drops in too and put them in through out the day if my eyes get itchy etc.

you have to get drops that can be used with lenses, i got one called blink and really helps on those hot dry days on the bike or in a smokey pub. recently whenever i wore my lenses the next day my eyes would be bloodshot and sore but this drops have sorted that Thumbs Up

i do ride in my specs sometimes but find they annoy me and have scratched the frames when they fell off the tank, which leads me to taking yr lid on and off with glasses is a bit annoying at times!

I used to wear contacts, but with glasses you can ride with your visor up. I don't have problems with dead zones. Might be because the bikes I've owned have had a more upright riding position, which means I'm turning my head, rather than trying to chew my shoulder.

I've always worn contacts when riding... up until last night.

All my contacts were at my girlfriends house, and I'd gone home to drop off my car and pick up my bike. Had to ride back with my glasses on. Not an experience I want to repeat.

Glasses didn't sit on my face right, kind of hovered above my nose. My usual glances at the mirrors/speedo and lifesavers were impossible. Had to completely turn my head to look in mirrors, and spin my head loads further for a lifesaver. Horrible.

Stick with the contacts!

Hi

Charlotte got some new glasses a few months ago and had major problems with them on the bike. Went into another opticians (same chain, different branch) at which the guy said that she should never have been sold those for use on a bike (he rode a bike as well). Far too small so pathetic periferal vision. She got some new frames and lenses which fixed the problem.

Seems this might be more of a problem at the moment as the current fashion is for tiny lenses in glasses.

All the best

Keith

For the first six months of having a bike, i only ever wore contact lenses. Now that i am a more confidant rider I can ride with glasses, but I know its safer with contacts for peripheral vision. Since then I have used glasses sometimes if im just off to the shops or something.

My glasses arm broke recently for no apparanet reason and I have reaslid now that its the stress they get if i wear them under the helmet, due to the shape of the arm.

I once rode 20 miles at night in fog that froze on my visor. I lifted the visor and it froze on my specs. Shocked I had to ride looking over the top of my specs!

Scariest journey ever.

I tend you use a visor anit mist spray on my glasses for normal misting problems.

I’ve ridden with spec’s since day one so I don’t know any different.
Its great in summer when you lift the visor a little for cool air and don’t get flies in the eyes. Its nice in summer rain and the cops can get cooled, but it’s a bugger when everything mists up and you don’t know which way you're pointing.

Always used glasses and never had probs with dead zones, guess you just learn to work around them. But I must admit it does piss me off in winter when they mist up in the cold (same goes for rain, sleet and snow). Evil or Very Mad

Thought about the contacts route but not keen on sticking something in my eye! Neutral

Initially, it seems like you'll never get the hang of it, even though you know you really should be able to. After the first week or two however, it all falls into place. And yes, they really are that good. The vision correction isn't quite the same as spectacles, but they do the job far better overall. That is, if you have the £10-15 a month to spend on them.
