Defensively, yet quickly? Assuming your on an 2/3 lane A-road and your filtering in between 2 lanes of stationary/very slow moving traffic.

I'd say so.

'Defensively' would be the difference between actively looking for people about to move on you and blissfully assuming they won't.

The quicker you go, the less 'defensive' you're going to be.

However you can still keep a good look out for tell tale signs of cars about to turn, asses the points when you're safest to pass, etc.

Agreed G, the quicker I find myself travelling, the less 'defensive' I feel, and vice versa. I've no idea how some bikers on my journey to work filter at speeds in excess of 50mph, surely thats a deathwish?

I would recommend never to filter at more than 20 mph. If only for the fact that sometimes car drivers find it very upsetting and do things lt impede your progress.
also
I have known a few people who have been knocked off their bikes because of a car not checking or indicating before changing lanes.
I also had a similar "off" when I was commuting once, if I'd have been down at 15mph I could have avoided it.

I got knocked off at 15-20mph by someone who changed lanes without indicating/checking mirrors, even if I was travelling at 5mph it would have been impossible to avoid it...

Personally, I'd say 'Defensively' - yes. But quickly at the same time is very difficult, since you wouldn't be able to react quickly enough to any unforeseen situation, thereby removing the 'defensive' aspect. What if (for example) you're passing a long queue of stationary traffic and some driver decides to get out and look at what's causing the holdup (as they do) ? They're all stuck in a queue of non-moving traffic, so the driver certainly won't be expecting anything to be coming passed him/her, so they're just going to open their car door without looking in the mirror first. And if you're travelling 'quickly' when this driver opens the door...

Nuff said, I think. Slow progress is better than no progress IMO Thumbs Up

I find it's best to filter when cars are alongside each other in their respective lanes, that way there's no chance of them deciding that empty space to their left/right looks appealing. Also try to get past cars as quickly as possible, then find a 'safe spot' before checking for the next possible gap.

Personally I'm happy to do that about 15mph faster than traffic up to about 80ish, and did so on the way back from Brands yesterday. Good fun, and didn't feel overly risky to me.

Less chance - I've had people try and pull into that big empty space occupied by myy large Passat Estate in the past.

Had rather too much fun on the way back from Brands in traffic yesterday - though wasn't going too over the top as I have done in the past (so maybe an exhaust hanging off is a good thing Smile ). Filtered pretty much all the way back to Reading.

Laughing True, I should have worded that differently. Still it feels the safest way to do it.

Just carry a gun and keep firing shots off at cars ahead, hopefully none of them will move into your lane then and they'll definetly be looking around so they're garunteed to notice you.
