Due to my recently found addiction to eBay and my medium term addiction to track days, I found a set of Diamond Tyre Warmers going fairing cheap on eBay over the weekend. Low and behold I won the auction for the decent price of £87 (normally about £150-160).

They turned up today, all looking good. Got home from work and grabbed the front one to plug it in and check it worked.

[stupidity mode on]

I rolled the tyre warmer round like it would be on the tyre, switched it on and went to grab a drink. Ten minutes I return to a dodgy burning smell and the fact that where the tyre warmers met in the middle (i.e. the section normally in contact with the tyre) they had melted together Doh! . I turned them off and pulled them apart, but now the cables (that heat up) are exposed and no longer held in place where the surrounding material melted (see picture).

Telling me I'm an idiot is not useful (I've cottoned onto that), but is there any way of fixing it, or is it screwed (I'm suspecting the latter, but you never know)?

I feel for you man... what matierial was it find some more and sew some new stuff over it.

I think it's the latter unfortunately.

At my first race school a year and a half a go a rather slow power bikes rookie managed to fry his brand new set in the same manner - his had been provided by a sponsor as well.

I was amused, though felt sorry for him.

the heat created by them had no where to disipate to (tyre) hence they cooked themselves

Well, at least I didn't do it in front of a crowd of people who could laugh at me. I posted it on a public forum instead... Eh?

No, they were only on for ten minutes, the problem was that they're designed to touch the tyre and not themselves. I was initially surprised that the material had reacted in that manner, but then again if it didn't then how would it transmit heat to the tyre? Oh well! Laughing

I'll be on the bike siding gracefully into the gravel at my next trackday after the front gives way, but the back stays planted! Doh!
