how long should a battery last without riding? also do you need to actually ride the bike or can you just let the engine run for a few mins to keep the battery charged?

Agree with that in principle. However, in the real world this can be reduced (sometimes drastically) by one or more factors. e.g.
Arrow if stored in damp conditions.
Arrow old wiring and/or short.
Arrow if not stored at maximum capacity.
Arrow if bike has been damaged or dropped affecting battery plates.
Arrow if the battery has been allowed to run down and already needed charging.

For the battery to be charged from the bike that'd be at optimum revs (say 4 to 6k, depends on bike type). Below that all that's been generated will be used by the bike, there's nothing extra to put back into the battery. So just leaving your bike to tick over won't work (as priller said above).

Best piece of bike kit would be an Optimate charger Very Happy

It takes about three weeks with no use for a battery to begin to sulphate, and after that the damage is ireperable. The battery may still be useable for months, but I would remove it from the bike and leave it on trickle charge every so often, or on an Optimate type clever charger if I was going to leave the bike for longler than about six weeks.

My aprilia RS125 wouldnt last a fortnight. When the CBR got a flat tyre and I got so pissed off I didnt fix it for a month it lasted about 5 weeks and started no problems.

Take the clock fuse out & it lasts alot longer.

Too late its gone! But after it went flat I tried to bump it but the bastard ended up half starting then cutting out again, leaving me past 'the point of no return' on a very steep hill Evil or Very Mad

It last longer if you disconnect the battery as the clock drains it.

To stop sulphation you can drain the fluid out and then put it back in. Just dont ask me how this is done.

I am feeling very smug at this point cos my rs has a kickstart Smile

And it was handy when i was having battery problems. It turned out to be that the rectifier had blown.

left my battery in my CB25 for over a year... went out and turned the key, and it started.

(that was when it was left out in all weathers) i suppose it depends on the battery

I removed a battery out of my old bike and left it staning in the garage for about 5 months. Stuck it in the bike last week and it fired up first push of the button Very Happy

For £40 it better do as well Evil or Very Mad
