Bike was fine rode to town, parked up and when i came back it wouldn't start just made a clunch sound, tried to bump it and no joy. After a minute or so tried to start it again and sounded really ratterly Sad then cut out and again wouldn't start.

Took it to a garage and they say that the crank has siezed solid and the barrell is marked.

They reckon it requires:

Nickaseal the barrell.
New gasket.
Rings

However so far it has cost me £80 and they haven't yet found the cause, the garage says it will be another £80 to fully inspect it all and give me a proper quote. At present they reckon it will be anything between £500 - £1000 to fix.

The bike has done about 8,000 miles and is a 2003 model, it also has a arrow system and is derestricted.

Any advice would be very much appriciated.

Thanks

Lestat.

Hi Dont know if what the garage said is correct but if it is going to be near the £1000 mark to fix you can pick up a second hand engine for less and have it fitted. Not reallt alot of help but i thougt i would mention it.

Anyone see the contradiction here? If the crank had siezed (which is quite unlikely) it simply wouldnt turn over at all. However if they simply meant the piston had siezed in the barrel then thats more understandable. IMO I would just get it fixed and tell them where to stick there £1000! All they will tell you was it needed a top end rebuild a bit before most little 2T engines that I have heard of which average about 10,000 miles between rebuilds. Dont know about getting the barrel done (but people on here will) but changing the rings/doing a top end rebuild yourself is not difficult on a 2T.

Hi

Possible to wreck the bottom end, but not that likely in normal use, just starting like that. I have had a main bearing fail and seize solid at about 700 miles from new, but it is not common.

Think David Silver spares will sell a new barrel and piston for around £100 (absolute bargain, far cheaper than replating and fitting a new piston from elsewhere). This way doing the top end would be around £150 in spare parts. However a dealer will charge labour and that will cost.

Taking the engine out yourself is not difficult if you have some helping hands, but they are still going to charge a couple of hours labour to take the engine out / put it back in. That alone could add £100 to the bill (depending on local labour rates). Think PJ Engineering (who have a good reputation) charge £400~£600 for a rebuild of a 2 stroke engine, with parts and labour.

All the best

Keith

top-end cost £165 (with seal & gaskets) and it's 3 hours labour . it will be very surprising that the crank has gone . just make 2 tests :
- engage the first gear and see if you can push it
- if yes , check the compression (take the plug off and push starter button with you tumb on the hole)

as you use to put decent 2strokes oil (even for landmower) it will not happen a break down .it's essential to have a good mixture and your pump well adjusted . bad oil makes smoky bikes . i use motul 600 which is the best for nsr

Certainly is possible to take out both ends of the engine. I managed it on a 3 month old ped by over-revving it down a hill (it was still restricted, and yes I was an idiot for doing it - lack of experience).

The crank was shot, as was the piston. All started due to a faulty head gasket loosing coolant IIRC.

Still, that's what warantee is for Razz

Best of luck with the repairs, hope it doesn't break the bank. Top end rebuilds are easy enough, it took us about 3 hours to change my mates barall and piston, but bottom end jobs seem more difficult.

Hi, er in my opinion have it check by someone that knows or a different garage it doesn't take long to strip a 125 engine out of a frame and then strip it down, £160 is a joke mate. If its the piston then its roughly £100 for rebore and then piston kit and gaskets.

If the crank has gone then buy another engine and strip the old one and sell the bits on ebay, thats what i did with my zxr engine, just make sure you buy a good engine!

good luck and i hope it doesn't cost you tomuch Thumbs Up

NSR uses a plated barrel. Costs about £100 to replate one even before paying out for a new piston, rings and gaskets.

All the best

Turns out they miss diagnosed the problem , two bolts had come out of the starter crank and jammed against the case! so all i need is a few hours labour, gaskets etc.

bout 430 quid all told, not cheap but better than what i thought!!

Very Happy
