I passed my test just yesterday and wanted to know which would be best. Can they both be restricted, would I save a lot on insurance on the 400, are they both as reliable, are servicing costs any different, are there any problems servicing the 400 as they are grey imports. Just want answers before buying because I have seen some much cheaper 400 bandits.
Thanks

IMO you would be better getting the 600 as both can be restricted. Plus the 600 would be easier to get spares, servicing etc..

'Instigator' had an ER-5 and I'm pretty sure it was resticted. I did my DAS on an ER-5 and found them no problem at all nice wee bikes to ride Thumbs Up

Anyone know of a place that sells the ER-5 restrictor kits and anyone know if the example that I posted about is a good price. It did state good condition and I think it has 12 months tax and MOT. Im interested because they are group 8 insurance and a bandit 600 is group 10 insurance according to mcn.

Most bike garages will be in contact with them. I think they're called FI/F1 International ??... When I got my cb500, i asked them about it and they just said they would handle everything.

...They charged me £150 of course, but I did some research beforehand and it seems a general price... something to do with paying for the research that was done into making them... ha... i'd rather have no research, and no restriction and be £150 up and have a faster bike... but sure...

Find a local garage and just go in and ask.

What bhp is the 400 anyways, surely can't be much more than 33bhp? I think the 600 kicks out about 90 something bhp... I know my cb500 de-restricted is around 56bhp...

Regards,
Chris

I think most insurance companies will bring down the insurance if you let em know its restricted... most will only let you do this over the phone as their crappy websites done accomodate for it (or they limit you to a 250cc bike)... however, I think the insurance group still plays a role in the final price.

I think £1250 is not bad for a 99 model with under 7k... sounds like a really good deal.

In comparison, I got my CB500 for £1400, 94 model with 31k... :-p, but I know the CB's are a bit more expensive than the ER-5s...

To be honnest, 7k in 6 years seems a little low... how many owners has it had and whats it been doing for all the time that its not been in use?

IMO bandit 400's are lush, they look better as standard than a 600 does. My brother just got 1 and its pretty damn sexy. Like said tho parts are an issue. I like Er-5's, parts will be easy and they are solid. Dunno if you know about them but honda bros 400s are exactly 33BHP and i'll put a vote for them as i have one and like it.

I don't know any further details, just saw it advertised on the wall inside the place I did my training and the details are just off the top of my head from what I remember, all the advertised bikes sound good. Will probably have to get the number and go have a look, sounds quite a good price.

Does anyone know of a popular ER-5 forum because I read on another forum of someone getting a second-hand restrictor kit cheap.

Dont you need the certificate...? and the certificate needs to match against your reg plate.

When I did my insurance they requested the certificate and without it would void my insurance (Honda Inusrance).

Although I have heard on here that a lot of insurance companies dont ask for it...

Apparantly a note from the garage that fits the kit is ok.

There won't be any ER-5 forum, this is as close as you will get.

Calm down, stop posting quite so much!

The CBR sounds like a good deal, but as lightfoot said, it sounds a bit too low...

It might have been sitting around for a long time to rust

or worse

the clocks have been changed at some point.

The way to check that out is know your way round it, make sure everything sounds OK, etc.

Former ER-5 owner right here and now I own a bandit 600.

I can get you a restrictor kit and instructions on how to fit one for bugger all (washers required cost 16p)

I had an official kit which cost £150 on mine, went into a tool shop and managed to find some washers the same size with the same size hole in them.

The ER-5 is a very good first bike easy to use and a real "do it all" sort of tool.

Not the fastest bikes ever but wind them up and they are certainly not slow.

They are much nicer looking than the CB500's and cheaper to buy.

I sold my 2001 C1 model that had 15,000 miles on it for £1200 and was in pretty good nick.

How much would you charge for this restritor kit and instructions and would a garage still produce a confirmation note i.e. would they know the difference.

I will produce you a restriction note, it will be as legal as any other...

I dont want anything for the kit, I need to go get some of these washers anyways as I said to someone else I will get them some...instructions are also free.

Do you just want my address then? What do you mean "it will be as legal as any other" is a note not enough to show the insurance company.

So is it even worth restricting it. What if they did ask for proof would an official letter from the garage be enough.

Ill get a quote tommorrow from my current insurer, Lexham, just to see if they ask for proof. Can anyone suggest other insurers likely to offer low premiums on an ER-5.
