Really arsed off...

I picked up my new Ninja 636 at the weekend and asked the guy about running it in. He said keep it below 8000rpm before the first service.

Last night I couldn't sleep and went for a ride, then when I got back I thought oh yeah, I'll get the owners manual out from under the seat and have a butchers before bedtime. In the book it says to run it in by keeping it below 4000rpm for the first 500 miles then below 6000rpm for the next 500 (even after you've had your 600 mile service).

I'm really arsed off with the guy, and myself for not checking out the handbook earlier. If I'd known I would have gone with what the book says. I know I probably haven't damaged it too much, but I wanted it to be 100% you know?

I wouldn't worry too much, as I understand it from when I got my R6 the rev limit is a guide and it's OK to go over occasionally. I was told that what is really important is:

1) Don't labour the engine, that’s really bad, try and keep the bike in a lower gear than you normally would.

2) Don’t keep the engine at a constant speed, that is also very bad, try and ride towns and back lanes where you are up and down the box, try and avoid A roads or Motorways but if you do have to go on them try and gently speed up slow down.

As you approach the end of the rev restriction slowly start to rev the bike out towards max revs every now and again. Then have the initial service and you are away.

I know what you mean mate, you would rather know, a friend of mine had a GSX-R and he was surprised at the RPM he had to keep it, it was pretty frustrating as you can imgine.
Nah you wouldn’t have done too much damage, just take it from here and it will run in fine.

Good choice of bike there mate (although I've got the same one meself, so would be biased ).

Up to about the 600 mile service the dealership advised me to keep it below about 6k revs I think. After that for every 1000 miles you do then you can up the revs by 1k.

As you found I was surprised when I looked in the guide to see that they recommend a fair bit below that. Basically when I asked the dealers about this they said as a general rule don't wrag the bollocks of it till about 1000 miles have been done and to gradually up the revs. Still, its a pain in the arse having to keep it below 60 mph for the first 600 miles.

What colour did you decide on in the end for the bike?

Stu_666: Thing is, I've done 450 miles already, and 8000rpm in 5th takes you to 90ish (which I've been doing). So I can't help thinking I've damaged it... wanted it to be sweet. Feel like taking it back and saying give me a new bike, but I know how far that'll get me.

Looking at that pic has made me realise that Kwak seem to be the only manufacurer that have any curves on their bike designs these days

Perhaps angular bikes are designed to avoid speed camera detection, just like a stealth bomber

I wouldn't worry about it too much mate, there are two sides to this one.

One side argue that a new bike should be run in to the letter, the other side argue that it needs thrashing from the off so that it makes more power. Both generally have arguments pro and con.

I would say that you haven't really done either anyway.

I know what you mean though. I bought my bike from new and the handbook says keep it below 5,000 rpm for the first 600 miles but it's really hard to do that when you're going along the dual carriageway at anything above 60mph.

Like someone else says here, I was also told not to worry too much, as long as I vary the speeds at which I ride. Mine's going in for its first service at the weekend (another example of inconsistency is that although the handbook says the first service is at 600 miles, the dealer recommends 500 miles). I think the handbook is just a guide - I'm sure modern bikes are built to cope with it.
