Im getting interested in these as commuters.

What are these sort of bikes good at, and what are they bad at ?

Im gonna test ride a dominator and a freeweind on Friday, so wanna know a bit more about them.

I had a BMWF650 funduro thingy.
Great fun up to about 90mph, could hang with anything up to about 50mph.
Handling was like sponge but good fun.

Mint for wheelies, and they make ace everyday bikes, high up so you can see spacers, enough power to get there etc.

For everyday you wont get much better.

Rode it through a winter with little cleaning, come spring cleaned it and you couldnt tell it had a hard winter, not even a furry fastner!.

In that style I've ridden a Honda Vigor, a BMW 650GS and 650CS Scarver.
They're all good bikes and would make great commuters though not ideal for motorway miles.
The CS Scarver looks great but is very expensive and runs otu of revs too quickly. The old GS I test rode broke down...but it seemed okay.
The Vigor would be my favorite, and despite using a detuned Dominator engine it felt very punchy and was certainly the most fun to ride.

I very nearly got the Vigor...and I'd like one in future as a say to day runaround/winter bike.

They make very good town bikes and are great for hooning round back and B-roads. Big suspension, sit up high riding position and torquey engine which means you don't have to change gear very often. They can be a bit vibey and arse numbing for distance/motorway work although I have done a fir bit of touring on a big single.

The suspension setup means you can take horrendous liberties into corners and get away with it.

The dominator is underpowered and over priced in my oppinion. The engine is yonks old and whilst it is well proven, there are much better machines out there.

If you are definately after a single, consider the Yamaha XTZ660 (and their supermoto version) or the MZ mastiff (which uses the XTZ engine but is cheaper and has a more trick chassis).

Also have a look at the Kawasaki KLE500. It is the same style of chassis but with the same 500 twin engine as the ER5. This has the advantage of having a less vibey engine and can live at motorway speeds in relative comfort. I bought an older one recently and am very pleased with it. They have just re-released them this year. I don't know why they didn't sell thousands when they first came out to be honest (well I do, it is because they were a horrible colour and had purple vinyl saddles).

what advantages does the kle500 have over a gpz500 ?
