The grinding noise sounds painful but unless it jumps out of gear now or anything odd then it should be ok.
The movement is the cush /crush (which 1 is it?) rubbers are worn. If you take take the sprocket carrier off the rubber bits in between that and the wheel, nothing to worry about.

Can't help you with the cost of the cam chain because I haven’t had it done! Sure it's not the valve clearances though?

Cush rubbers are about £20 - £25 (improves the riding sooo much) wouldn't but a second hand one though.

Ticking is probably valve clearences but could be the cam chain. All engine work is expensive. Confused

I wouldn't worry about the other.

If the slack in the chain has increased - tighten it.

sounds like you've got a bit of sorting out to do!

changing gears with high revs isn't a good idea unless your bike is fitted with a quick shifter and is highly tuned for racing! it may have been that you popped off the clutch too early, say halfway through the gear change and the gears hadn't engaged probably. doesn't sound too healthy for the bike but i'm sure you won't need to take the gearbox apart and inspect it.

as for the rear sprocket, tighten it up a bit. my chain jumps when i conck it into first gear, not off the sprocket or anything but it's never made my sprocket move.

clattering sounds like valve clearances like zxr400er said, if you're not careful this will really do your engine in. my friend had the same problem, and despite my warnings, his engine got a little bit too warm. as everyone knows when things get hotter they expand, so, my friend revved his engine a little bit too much and put the valve straight through the top of the piston! instead of getting new piston and valves etc he just bought a new engine off ebay for 140 quid and we're getting him back on the road!

Not true at all.

Sounds like you didn't hit it up hard enough and the gears didn't mesh somehow. Mine has done the same thing many a time. It's not good for the gearbox, but it happens if you don't give a positive enough click, particularly from 1 -> 2.

If your drive chain is slack, tighten it. When you are coming off the throttle it could be hitting the top of the swing arm, due to it being too loose. Did on mine, common thing.

So tighten the chain and practice your high rpm shifting Smile. If problems persist try some of the other suggestions.

clutchless changes don't harm your bike at all...

in fact they put less stress on drive components as there's not the unloading and loading assoricate with slower shifting.

Done properly that is...

poor, mis-engages clutchlkess shufting can caus much grindage, and eventually damage the 'box but you'd have to be some sort of muppet for tgat to happen

most people who ride ZXR400s aren't exactly pro bikers and aren't gonna be able to do clutchless changes properly, i mean i do it every now and again but only cause i engage the quickly and really ram it up rather then taking ten seconds or so to change without the clutch!

Excuse me, but the guy in the 'fast' ford that I left at the lights on my 125 can vouch for me clutchless shifting. It really doesn't take much skill. gun it, roll off throttle, pressure on lever then pop the gear and get back on the gas. Most if not all riders from 125 upwards are capable of clutchless shifting, and most 400 riders are experienced bikers that enjoy the merits of a tiny machine they can chuck around, far quicker than a 600, not necessarily amateurs.

Clutchless shifting is harmless as long as you only do it on the up. Thumbs Up

Me and many of my other mates on 400s can clutchless shift. Don't rule out the skill of people under 20. Some of them don't have cars so ride all year round, and have sharper reflexes than some older riders. OK not all of us have "learnt" what the "elders" have, but remember, we are the ones who leave the new R1s for dead round the twisties on our 10 year old 400s.

I've been riding for 1 month on my little ZXR400 and was clutchless shifting after a few days.
It's easier than using that clutch lever thing when you're hanging on for dear life.
Only do it from 2nd gear upwards otherwise it's harder to get away with.

Sorry fella. That wasn't meant as an attack.

Christ almighty I've just realised I'm nearly 10 years older than you and I'm only 26! I thought I was just a kid!!
When I was your age, the only clutchless shifting I was doing was on my mountain bike.

If you ever crash it or have it nicked, don't tell me, i'll probably cry!
