Hi all, was at my mates today and he told me that his next door neighbour is selling a ZZR600 on a 1990 plate. No tax, no MOT, needs a new back tyre and the brake pistons need cleaning renovating because they have seized with little to no use. The guy said that he was looking for about 4-500 quid for it, seems a little steep to me this or am I wrong in thinking that??

I have read some opinions on here about the later models but nothing much on this model any thoughts??

Cheers

Bod

1990 would be a ZZR600 D1, which are crap comparied to the 1993-onwards E1-E7 models. you could get a runing 1993 E1 model for that price.

l would stay clear.

Expensive.

I reckon if you were to buy it for that, you'd at least want it MOTd first.

most old ZZR600,s have been fitted with full stainless steel exhaust systems nowndays becasue the oringal rotted away many years ago.

E models are nice bikes, should last between 50-70k before the engine dies.

The guy did say that it had a new exhaust a 4 in to 1 stainless, was a bit shocked at the price to be honest, but I thought for a winter bike would have been ok, bugger.
Cheers

Parts a plenty on ebay Thumbs Up

Can't really complain for less than a grand Thumbs Up

Hi

Not that bad a deal to be honest. Would doubt you would get a worthwhile E model for that money.

Some of the build quality is fine. Typical Kwak. Watch out for the calipers, minor brackets and quick rot exhausts. But some of those you already know about. Biggest nasty is gearbox issues and jumping out of second.

While they did suffer from carb icing this should be fine on any UK spec one as long as the filter in the carb heater is kept clean.

I would certainly be VERY tempted at £400.

All the best

Keith

Hiya Keith, so would I be insulting the guy if I offered less than that?

Hi Keith,

Wondered if you can give any more info on the carb heaters?

Not had any experience with them on bikes before Confused

Where's the filter you mentioned? How do the heaters work?

on the ZZR E1 models the carbs are heated by coolent passing throught small 8mm pipes under the carb bowls from the radiator.

the D modes have electrical heaters under the carb float bowls which is unreilable

HAHAHA carb icing was the bain of my life when i had the ZX10.
It would run on 2 or 3 pots and point blank refuse to pull.. There are little gauze filters in the waterpipes that run through the carb bodies, if these filters aren't kept clean they will block and render the carb heating as useless.

Problem with the electric heaters is the wiring corrodes and then they fail to work as I found on my 1991 GS500EM a few years back.

And they ain't cheap to replace either!
