Depends entirely on the bike.
On a cruiser it'd be quite easy to ground the pegs, (as they are low to the ground already). Yet on, for example, one of the latest 600s sports bikes you'd find that getting you knee down would require less lean angle, particularly if you hang off a lot.
My thoughts are that you should try hanging off and sticking knee out. Often knee down is a good amount of lean before you start running out of tyre. If you are getting knee down on the road, I feel you are going plenty fast, and shouldn't have any need to ground your pegs (assuming your bike can take knee down before pegs down). Unless you do it by accident.
And no hanging off to an excess doesn't count. |

can get my toes down on the thunderace...
that's with the balls of my feet on the pegs, my feet turned in so there's no significant overhang, and I'm using rearsets
but I can't get my kneedown..
not that I try.. I don't see kneedown as something I need to do on the public roads.
I sunscribe to "Fridge theory", ie you should ride in a way such that if you happen to encounter a fridge lying in the middle of the road, just around that next bend.. you don't come a cropper.
doesn't mean you aren't quick, does mean you live longer

I think knee down on the GPZ would be near impossible but I've got the toe down plenty on it with my feet well up. ____________________ Northern Irish? www.nibikers.com |

Knee down is fine; had the peg down a few times on my CBR1000RR, but it feels like its going to fall over by then so I generally avoid doing it. ____________________ aKa: Ducky |

Only reason I get my peg down is cos I want to, I've often thought of sticking my elbow out slightly to see if it will hit the tarmac, but I think that's risking a bit too much on the road.
I'll stick to the knee me thinks like this:

I wanted to get my peg down a long time ago (before knee sliders) - camber changed while I was prolonging the scratching and I got half the rest of the bike down also .
Done the elbow down thing, took a bit of effort - was on a small roundabout and the tyres were right on the edge of traction while doing it.
Squid, hang off more - watch moto gp or similar and see how they hang off. |

I'm grinding my toes and pegs all the time just now, just because I'm on the 'non-knee slider ' leathers at the min as I can't be arsed wrestling into my 1-piece numbers.
I find it takes more effort getting my knee down, more hanging off and concentrating less on riding the bike properly. And its getting to that time of the year where grip is starting to go a wee bit. ____________________ Old bikes >>> https://www.bikepics.com/members/cc123/ |
