Doh! Got insurance through NIG and need to cancel less than 24 hours later due to unforseen changes to my travelling arrangement. Is there any way I can cancel without paying penalties? Sad

did you pay in one lump, there should be a 14 day cooling off period where you can cancel and get all your money back. If you are paying by installments also cancel the direct debit aswell just incase.

They do have a 14 day cooling off but only if there are errors on your policy... I think I'm stuck! Crying or Very sad

I think its a basic public right that can't be taken away to cancel within 14 days, might be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure you can cancel anyway but just in case you can't, tell them the car/bike is modified but it's not down on the certificate as being so. They will probably say sorry we can't cover modifications, cancel the policy and offer you a refund.

If they still want to cover you and ask what the mods are tell them something that will scare them off such as diy cabriolet conversion (car) or home built frame (bike) ect.

You should be able to just straight forward cancel it though, maybe paying a few quid in admin fees if they are tight ass's.

Check with 'em, but I think anything you buy over the phone/t'internet ("distance selling") is covered by a cooling off period (possibly under the Consumer Credit Act). In theory, you should be able to cancel your policy within this period and incur no penalty.

There should be a cooling off period, but if by some stroke of bad luck there isn't, I think you'll get about 90% back anyway.

I believe it's a basic right to have the 14-Day Cooling off period. You will probably have to pay an admin fee though.

I know Dad insured his car and then found a cheaper company who would also cover me - he just wrote to the first company telling them to stick it and took out insurance with the other company.

Don't think he lost any money over it.

I've cancelled policies within 14 days (only took it out so I could ride home), I've been refunded in full almost every single time, one place charged me for two day's cover (all £9 of it).

If you pay by installments you should be covered for a 14 day cooling off period under the credit consumer act. Thiers also the distance selling act as well, which you could use if you've paid all of it upfront.
