Posted: 01:04 - 22 Sep 2005 Post subject: Cheaper Insurance BECAUSE We Ride |
 |
|
Hi all,
If it's wasting your time it'll drop down the forum quickly, but food for thought, bearing in mind it's quite late and I've had a few beers and a couple of whiskeys.
Was browsing Ebay, and this thought came to me.................
We are all safer car drivers because we ride, nobody can deny that. You just can't get the thrill from a car as they are too slow, so we drive slower as there is no point to driving fast in a poxy car that gives little feedback (well i do) and our awareness is loads more than any car driver that never rode (pauses to extinguish ciggie and sip from glass), anyway, surely we should be entitled to a mega discount on our car insurance.
Must say though I've found myself looking at filtering to the front at the lights while caged and only realising just in time that I can't.
Is there anyone out there with some clout in the insurance industry?
WTF this has to do with browsing Ebay is anyones guess, but the thought came to mind and I just had to voice it.
The amount of times I pressed backspace to make this legible is phenominal, so some interest in this matter will be noted, as will lack of interest.
Good luck. ____________________ Check my website. look at my profile though as putting it here would be spamming methinks (I worked hard to create it so at least look at it!) Nothing to do with bikes I might add! Might appeal to the more feminine personality. |

You might save money buying 2 policies from one company, but all they give a crap about is how much they can felch you for.
Of course, when you mention that you've gotten a cheaper quote, knowing that you haven't crashed on your current vehicle (maybe!), they will probably drop quite a long way, to keep your business for that too. |

I always make a point of mentioning it but it doesn't generally make much difference.
Agree entirely, just as you should get money off your bike insurance for having spent X years in a car.
In fact, what I really want is a six wheel policy cos I can't drive the car and ride the bike at the same time, can I? It should be all about insuring *yourself* and not the vehicle - pick the highest risk one you own, be charged for that and everything that's less dangerous is included free. But that'll never happen, there's too much profit to be made. |

Without having thought about it terribly much you'd have:
Insurance for you to operate vehicles on the road. Taking into account your previous history and perhaps with exclusions to cut the overall cost (eg. 17 year old could exclude all cars above group 8, people who had no intention of riding a bike could exclude them). Would be TPO on other people's vehicles with the option for it to be FC on your own.
Insurance for the vehicles you own. Not for them being driven but basic third party cover for the 'it has to be insured to be on the street' bit and theft cover as desired.
NCB wouldn't be car-specific or bike-specific any more, and could be used on all your vehicles as it's your NCB as a road user, not one as a driver and one as a rider. Plus as the theft insurance and the driving insurance are different things, a theft should only put up your theft insurance since it doesn't make you more likely to crash. And vice versa. So lets have a No Accident Bonus and a No Theft Bonus instead of a No Claims Bonus.
While I'm at it, lets do away with yearly premiums. If I decide I won't ride any bikes for 3 months in winter (presuming my bike riding is the highest risk bit of my cover) I should be able to change to a lower 'I'm only driving a car' fee for a few months. Buy your insurance by the month so you can easily change it to suit what your doing. Perhaps if insurance was more flexible, people might be less inclined to lie... Change the bonus system to count in months and not years so you don't get screwed over if you have to cancel in month 11.
Think it'll happen? |

Hi
Wish you could get decent multi vehicle policies. Short of a trade policy you are stuck.
Some countries have 3rd party insurance in the equivalent of road tax. This just means you have stupidly expensive road tax (and being the government they are not interested in making things cheaper).
If there was a move towards having fleet policies for individuals it would be great, but if it was just one company then I would be dubious about loosing several sets of full no claims.
All the best

I have said this before. We need a wholesale review of our licencing and insurance system.
I think third party insurance should be state controlled and apply to the driver. The 'empty vehicle' liability insurance could be part of the car tax, it wouldn't be all that much.
The rate for this third party driver insurance should be set on the basis of a three or five yearly 'assessment' with a driving examiner, you would be given a points score according to the standard of your driving, the lower your points, the cheaper your insurance.
Your points score would be bumped up by both claims and by failure to get an assessment. So say you were assessed at 25/50, a small bump would add 10 points for next years insurance, a bg smash would reset it to maximum, overrunning your assessment date would add 5 points per month overdue.
Fire, theft and comp insurance would carry on as normal.
Just a way to try to tackle bad driving rather than penalising all young drivers or all sportsbike riders in a blanket fashion. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
