hi all,
I wonder if you could help. I went to pick up my new bike tonight (its a cagiva mito) and on my way home the bike started to jerk backwards and forwards like it was running out of petrol. I pulled over and noticed the chain was very very loose, but i had no other choice but carry on riding home. Anyway just before i got home the chain slipped off and i had to leave the bike and walk the rest Thumbs Down not fun!

Anyway, can i just put the chain back on and tighten it or do i need to buy a new chain? im assuming the chain slipped off because it has stretched too much but i dont fancy forking out for a new one as ive just splashed a loada cash on the bike itself.

If i can just put the chain back on could somebody tell me how to this and also how to tighten it enough so it wont slip off again. any help will be really appreciated so thanks in advance Smile

Personally I'd inspect the sprockets first and see what state they're in, then inspect the chain rollers to see if they look grooved in the centre from running over the sprockets.

You can do all of this with the c&s on the bike, but you need to remove the front sprocket cover to see the front sprocket.

If it all looks ok tension the chain up and see how it goes. Is it a new chain? Otherwise I assume its been neglected for a while to stretch that far.

Hi

Chances are the sprockets are wrecked, and if the chain has stretched that quickly then it is probably on its last legs. However worth checking that the problem is the chain and not something silly like the front sprocket coming off (can happen easily on some Cagivas).

The teeth on the sprockets should be a fairly even shape (ie, leading and trailing edge of each tooth should be mirror images of each other), and as they get worn they become hooked.

Hopefully it is not as bad as this one:-

All the best
