I'm a complete novice to this, with little mechanical knowledge, so please bear with me!

I have a '98 Speedfight 100, it has worked fine for the past couple of weeks, but this morning won't start on either electrical or kick start.

The immobiliser light flashes when it is in steering lock, so there must be some juice in the battery, and when I try the ignition the starter whirrs but the kick start doesn't seem to catch.

Can anybody suggest how to get the damn thing running again? Sad

Sounds like not enuf juice in the battery.
Can you call a cab/taxi and ask them to bring jumper cables to help you?
Then check out the charge circuit. (Yourself or at a bike shop.)
Maybe you're miles from anywhere. Shit

My dad used to have one of those and he had the problem of the starter whirring like its not caught on. That was something broken and the way we got round it was just by tapping the starter loads really fast on and off and it catches.
Or just kickstart, but if its not working with that then im not sure, does it kick over with the kickstart?

Not the ignition system.
The starter is whirring cause not enough power in the battery to pull and hold in the starter soleniod.

Or worse the bendix mechanism is shot. Sick
There yous made me say it.. Crying or Very sad

If it doesn’t work on the kick, it might be the spark plug. No?

Read the question boys, the answer is there.
It's a mechanical glitch not High Tension Electrics.
Put a rope around her neck and pull her round the scheme until it siezes or starts.

Yeah if the battery is dodgy the kickstart would get it going after 10 hard minutes, so give that a shot and if no luck, take a look at other things, sparkplug, etc.

Mine had a similar problem, but I dragged it to the repair shop and left it there overnight, they rang the next day and it was working perfectly! I didn't understand it, they didn't either, so it's a mystery.

my old one used to drain the battery like anything, I'd charge the battery up and try it then. Thumbs Up (p.s. mine showed the imobiliser light flashing, but its only and LED and they consume hardly any curent butr a starter motor will need more)

Thanks guys.

I removed the battery, charged it for a couple of hours and put it back in, the engine sparked into life first time on the electric starter. First time I've ever done that! Thumbs Up

Now.
To prevent similar disapointment in the future:
How old is the bike/battery?
How often do you use the bike?
How far do you run it?
Can you get the battery 'Load tested' by an auto electrician?
Batteries are not fickle things.
They are good or bad.
Good batteries will accept a charge and hold it for a long time, more than four weeks anyway.
Bad batteries may not hold a charge overnight or fail when the heavy load of a starter is put on them.
Two to three years is good. Anything more is by the grace of god.
Are you leaving the wipers and heater on when you park it at night? Laughing
