Celebrity support
Martin Bayfield, Ex-British Lion and former Rugby Football Player of the Year says:
"I am delighted to be supporting this fantastic event, which we hope will raise £200,000 for Cancer Research UK. This really is a great opportunity to see Twickenham Rugby Stadium from a new angle, as well as doing something unique for a good cause.
1. Do I need experience to abseil and is it safe?
Anyone can abseil, regardless of abseil experience, or any disability. Full training will be given by qualified abseil instructors. Abseiling is a completely safe activity, provided that basic guidelines are observed.
The abseil instructors have many years of experience running events of this nature and have helped over 4,000 people abseil in aid of cancer research.
The instructors are very patient and are sympathetic to participants who have fears or difficulties. They are used to helping members of the public who have never abseiled before, and will give verbal instruction at every stage, whilst allowing you to take your time.
2. How old do I need to be?
You must be over 14 to take part. If under 18, you must also complete a parental consent form with your registration form. Please call us on 08701 602040 or email
worldrecordabseil@cancer.org.uk for this.
3. Is there a weight limit?
Anyone can abseil whatever their weight. Each rope can hold the weight of a double decker bus, so no need to worry!
4. How do I register to take part?
You can download a registration form (saved as a PDF file), call 08701 60 20 40 or email
worldrecordabseil@cancer.org.uk for your form.
Registration costs £15 and includes a FREE World Record Abseil T-shirt, provided on the day (one size). You will be sent an information pack, including your abseil number, arrival time and sponsor forms.
5. Can I register on the day?
Places for this abseil are limited, and it is most likely that the available slots will fill up very quickly. We recommend you register as soon as possible to guarantee your place.
6. Can I register more than one person?
You are very welcome to sign up as part of a team but we do need a separate form from each member. Please write the team name on all your registration forms. If you aren't able to send them together, please include a note saying how many are outstanding, so we can try to reserve places. However, please note, these are subject to availability.
7. How much sponsor money do I need to raise?
You must raise a minimum of £50 in sponsor money and bring it with you on the day as a cheque or postal order. The fantastic incentives on offer should encourage you to aim even higher than £50.
Raise over £100 and bring it on the day to receive a FREE Cancer Research UK trainer bag
Raise over £250 and bring it on the day to receive a FREE Cancer Research UK AM/FM Radio
Top Fundraiser wins a prize
Please note – your registration fee covers the cost of the event only.
8. What should I wear?
Please wear trainers or walking boots. We also recommend that you wear tracksuit bottoms or leggings for greatest comfort during your abseil. All necessary equipment will be provided on the day, including hard hats and gloves.
Long hair must be securely tied back and jewellery should be removed or covered with microtape. Please ensure that your pockets are completely empty.
There is nowhere to wait indoors before your abseil, so wrap up warm!
9. What time do I need to arrive?
When you register, you will be assigned a check-in time. Please be punctual and arrive at your given registration time to ensure smooth running of the event for everyone.
10. What do I need to bring with me on the day?
You must bring a minimum of £50 sponsorship money and your abseil number with you on the day.
You will be given your World Record Abseil T-shirt, when you check in, which we would like you to put on over your clothes.
Feel free to bring your friends and family to cheer you on as you make your descent from the roof at Twickenham Rugby Stadium!
11. Why do I need an abseil number?
All participants will be assigned a number. You must bring this with you on the day so that you can be easily identified by the organisers, abseil instructors and by your friends and family waiting for you to abseil. We recommend you pin your number on to your World Record Abseil T-shirt, provided at check-in, before you abseil.
12. What happens if it rains?
The abseil can go ahead safely regardless of wind and/or rain.
13. How will I know if the World Record is broken?
On completion of your abseil, you must sign the World Record Logbook or your abseil won't count!
We will be updating the total of abseils throughout the day. The results will be posted on this website and also sent to all participants in the week following the abseil.
