Airbrushing

HI,

Well the winter is coming upon us, and I need something to do to stop me going banananananas.

I fancy taking up Airbrushing, as eventually i'd like to be able to do my own tank work etc.

Can anyone give me some pointers, what the basics are i'd need, what not to buy (seems to save me more money than telling me what I should buy lol) Any good books on the subject.

I was thinking about airbrushing earlier actually, not on the tank but I fancied airbrushing a design on the back of the leather jacket/waistcoat.

not to steal your thread too much but Does anyone know what paints they use when spraying leather jackets? The only colour I want for my design is white. Wondering wether one of those tyre pens would do the trick or tip ex

you can pick up airbrushes on eBay really cheap, looks like great fun to me.

Yeah, I've been googlin and such, some amazing artists out there, I used to do alot of work on glass, and I do miss it.

If you are looking at doing small and very accurate work make sure you get a decent double action airbrush. I have both double and single action airbrushes. The single action just doesn't go fine enough for outlining but is good for doing the base coat.

I haven't done any for a while but i used to do a lot of model making and painting growing up. Takes a lot of practice and patience. I wouldn't go back to using propellant cans after having a decent oilless compressor and resovoir.

Ebay does have some good deals on airbrushes just don't go for the cheap model painting ones made by tamia or humbrol.

erm i have an airbrush set,,,, i wouldnt let it near my bike thoughas its not the best quality one,,,,

if your good at art you shouldnt have too much of a prob taking it up
I have experience in spraying cars and also modeling toys,, its bloody hard to get used to the small spay and adjusting the preassure but eventually you get used to it,,
im not good by a long shot but probebly would if i had more practice which i dont

most tatooists will know of air brush artists and i might add now that there not cheep

From the research I've done, reading, talking to people etc... It's all in the preperation. Make sure that your surface area is masked and properly clean then begin. Go to the library and pick up a book or two on the subject. Lots about.

The initial cost of it seems very expensive so make sure you want to do it, or buy a cheap £30-40 set to get you going. This way the intitial outlay is less should you loose interest.

Well, from what I can see the main outlay is the compressor, now my dads got one the size of a submarine, thats brand new, in the shed, just waiting for me to play with....

The Badger Airbrushes look quite good, they do single and dual and other different sorts, I had a quick look on the hobbycraft website which does do quite good quality stuff surprisingly.

What got me into thinking of this oyu see, was browsing ebay last night, and seeing the stunning aray of Pearls you can get quite cheap now, if only you knew how to do it yourself....

I'm also wanting to make my bike very much my own

It'll look like Blackpool tower by the time i've done wi it lol

(ps Teaman - Saw sabbath when I was 12 at the city hall wi Dio ~ too many castles n dragon shit for me, then Ozzy on the Ozmosis tour, then *not worthy* made it to the opening night in Birmingham for the sabbath reunion ~ truly awesome, although the 70's inspired 'lighting' left alot to be desired, and I was waiting with baited breath for Bill Ward to collapse off his drum seat, bless him)

In my old student days I borrowed a mates airbrush and used a spare tyre for the air supply (hard to keep a constant pressure but cheaper than a compressor). On my leather I painted on Giger's Alien and airbrushed it coming out of some smoke. Still got it in the loft somewhere, I used acrylic paints from one of those war games shops (where they paint the little figures) as the paint is flexible and coated it after with lacquer. The design came away a bit after 3ish years so I went around it with a soldering iron (very lightly) and repainted the outline and its still there (13 years old)

cool, aughta get a picture of that for us and post it up sounds interesting. Their's one of those geek shops (soory I meant warhammer shops) in town by me. Definately gonna give it a go now I know what paint works. cheers

Airbrushing is a great skill to have, unfortunately it isn't as easy as it sounds, it takes alot of practice!!!

You'll definately need a dual action airbrush if your to do any close up detailed work, but these are usually very expensive, in the range of £100+ if you get them from a shop. They are precision tools that break really easily, especially if you don't clean them properly after each use. I've found cleaning them out with WD40 does the trick to dissolve the paint and oil the moving parts.
Any ho, you'll need masking tape to mask off the speperate ares of your art work, some artists just do it all free hand, but the edges tend to be fuzzier and less defined. You can buy different widths depending on what you need it for, i.e thin for edge lines, or thick for large areas. Alternatively, you can buy frisk film, which is like a transparent tacky film you can lay over large areas and cut directly into. But this is also expensive, around £8.00 for 10 sheets of A4.
Next off is paint, you can buy loads of different varieties but the three main ones are acrylic, water based and enamels. Water based are best used on paper, acrylics are good on leather jackets and things like that (waterproof, tougher), and enamels are good on motorbikes! Although its best to read up on the different varieties to gain a better knowledge of what to get for each job....
Have fun, enough of me blabbering on. There is alot more to tell, but there are the basics. You can buy dvds and books on airbrushing, they'd be more helpful than me!!!

I have an airbrush set. But its my stepdads, and scince him and my family just moved into a new house i havent had the chance to use it (or any of the rest of the workshop for that matter!). But as i understand it, it gets everywhere and you need very good ventilation (ie. an extractor?). Can someone experienced clear this up for me?

any vehicle paints require ventalation, or your goint to get as high as a kite. Not good really because you may aswell sniff petrol if your going to do it without ventalaition.

a warm enviroment is important aswell.

above all practice is the best way to go,, play on scrap metal
