Bikers die in horror crash Sep 27 2005
By Andrew Hirst, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TWO bikers were killed in a moorland horror crash.
They died as their high-powered bikes slammed into the side of a lorry on Manchester Road above Marsden at 3.35pm yesterday.
The first firefighters at the scene tried desperately to save the life of one of the motorcyclists, but a doctor declared both dead at the scene.
The tragedy is thought to have happened when the lorry, loaded with crushed limestone, had pulled into the lower entrance of the roadside Motorman's Cafe and then came back out of the top entrance to turn right and go back into Marsden.
The bikes came round a sweeping left-hand bend and hit it.
Cafe owner Jean Hall was just saying goodbye to relatives outside the cafe when the tragedy happened.
She said: "I just heard one almighty bang.
"The bikes were going towards Oldham and the lorry had turned around to go back to Marsden when the bikes just went straight into it."
The dead men have not yet been named, but they do come from Huddersfield.
One is aged 51 and the other is 24.
The older man was riding a Honda and the younger man was on a Kawasaki.
Both bikes are blue and the pair are thought to have come from Huddersfield town centre.
Pc Peter Doyle, of Huddersfield traffic police, said the wanted anyone who saw the bikes on Manchester Road, or the accident itself, to come forward.
The first emergency service team on the scene was an operational support unit from Pontefract fire station, which had been doing some training at Marsden fire station. They had to free one man from under the lorry. The other victim was in the road.
Anyone with information should phone Pc Richard Hyde or Pc Dave Briggs on 01484 436847. ____________________ .......... PLOD ............ zx636 2004 |

Its in the evening paper here in Oldham as well.
Witnesses to death crash sought
Police are appealing for witnesses to an accident between Marsden and Saddleworth on Monday in which two motor-cyclists were killed.
Traffic police in Huddersfield are still trying to determine the cause of the accident in which the bikers slammed into the side of a lorry in Manchester Road, above Marsden, near the entrance to the Motorman’s transport cafe.
Cafe owner Jean Hall was just saying goodbye to relatives outside when the accident happened.
She said: “I just heard one almighty bang. The bikes were going towards Oldham and the lorry had turned around to go back to Marsden.”
The dead men have not yet been named, but police say they lived in Huddersfield.
Anyone with information about the accident, at 3 .35pm on Monday, is asked to ring Huddersfield police traffic department on 01484-436847.
I know that road well, the bend in question is a pretty fast uphill bend, its probably taken about 80mph, but you have to be careful as there are usually sheep on the road round there. I expect i'll go a whole lot slower next time I ride on there.

Sad to hear about it
I didnt see the need to include the bit about the "high powered bikes" though, as it seems an irrelevant point, possibly aimed at implicating them for speeding.

May I ask why you're all mourning the death of two random people?
It was in the paper today that an old lady has died, she lived in the same county as me too! |
