I can just about understand using an MP3 player on a long ride but why do so many people use them commuting in town - strikes me as dangerous I would rather hear what's going on around me.

On Monday I was following a scooter and his iPod had fallen out of his pocket and was hanging by the headphones lead. I tried to get his attention tooting and flashing him but he just ignored me. As we pulled up at some lights I almost got next to him to tell him but the lights changed and he rode off. Sadly the iPod fell off the headphone lead to it's doom... smashed on the road, and was run over by a following car. Not surprisingly the scooter boy looked round when the music stopped.

Beats me why... Confused

Give them all a vtwin and I bet they don't take their music players in. Wink I think it is dangerous and stupid but a lot of things are and won't bother preaching about it. Smile

I listen to Mp3s alot, but I also am aware that I might not be able to hear as much, so I check about more. To be honest, for me, sound doesn't play that much of a role, at speed you can't hear anything, and round town, I rely on sight more.

Hi

Not sure. I regularly land up driving the car with the stereo off because I am so used to not having one on a bike. Mind you, for me most round town journies are short so I am not on the bike long enough to get bored and want the music.

At high speeds it is not like you are going to hear much, especially with a fairly noisy helmet (tried with my old Kiwi helmet years ago, and by 45mph it drowned out the music from a tape player on full volume Shocked ).

Also not sure on the legal situation. Used to be commonly said that using both ear phones could result in prosecution for driving without due care and attention. Not sure if m/any people were done for this though.

All the best

Keith

Thing that gets me is what happens if something works it's way loose on your bike or it develops a rather horrible sound. Might not be able to hear it over your music.

I play karaoke in my helmet anyway. Much better than all that 'tat' on the radio.

No - but I do sing to myself - quite embarrassing at lights sometimes, bopping away, tapping on the bars, that kind of thing. Safest place for my singing, inside a full face helmet - perhaps I should get one for the other half?

I completely agree with you. It very dangerous to drive/ride with headphones in, you need to hear what is going on around you if your in a car or on a bike.

Its something I haven't done and will never even think of doing. Stereo in a car is fine, but I wouldn't wear headphones.

If it's a long ride then I used to, but nowadays I can't be bothered.
Too old you see Wink

When I did wear my earphones it was low enough so I could also hear traffic..I would never put myself in any danger.
When I am driving in a car, I find the music more off putting, as it is hard enough to hear the engine/and other cars with the windows up.
So I disagree with that >>>

It makes people stay away from you !! Wink

I've got 3 hours of motorways between home and uni. My iPod is invaluable between those places. I would probably nod off with boredom otherwise.

I use some headphones that go over the top of your eyes so they don't fall out, and I can hear the music really well, even at (MZ) motorway cruising speeds.

I always ride with my Zen on. Always. The only time I don't is if I've done some work on the bike and I actually want to hear the engine. Other than that, given that I can't hear shit over the two stroke scream and then my helmet blocks out what's left, why not?
edit; lol, forgot to answer the question Very Happy Because I like listening to music when I ride. Bit of a no-brainer really.

Because the person he was talking about was listening to an iPod.

If you like the post can be edited so that it states that the scooter chav was listening to their portable musical entertainment device, but then we're not the BBC.
