helmet lifespans...

is it true that helmets only have a useable lifespan as far as the safety clarts who make them are concerned of a few years? polycarb helmets around 3 years I was told and other helmets (fibreglass) around 4/5 years before you have to get a new one. Can they really deteriorate like that even if undamaged?

well mines still strong as ever. i dont see a reason why they should, i doubt everyone on here changes their helmet every three years.

it obviously wouldn't show any external signs i shant imagine but the internal structure weakens apparently. The one bloke said he chopped up a few different helmets after their lifespan had ended just to prove it? dunno if that's rubbish or not just what he said.

Inner helmet cushioning gets less as the helmet is worn
This directly affects the deceleration time for your brain in an impact.
And the 'fit' is compromised. Loose helmets are no good.
The inner polystyrene is the important shock absorbing member in the crash helmet 'system'

Ruff ges, 3 years max.
Cheaper helmets might be less.

And after 2 years you have an old fashioned thing on your nut.

I agree with walloper, also some shite helmets will have a coating sensitive to uv light, which probably won't help. Everytime i decide to spend my money on my bike, and not a new helmet, some gimp always makes a thread about unsafe helmets... thanks for the reminder(!)

normally they quote 6 years, but they only do that so they can get your money IMO.
