changed my oil and filter today, very satisfying, and messier than i was ready for (apoligies about the patio dad Confused i'll sort it out)

sump plug torque was not listed in any manual i own, same goes for the oil filter housing bolt, so i was wondering what you guys used when you did yours? and how important it actually is?

i did both oil filter housing bolt and sump plug to 55Nm cos thats what the manual listed as general guide for bolts of 12mm thread diameter (which the sump plug had) the oil filter housing bolt was like 18mm but i did that to the same torque so its easier to remember

any thoughts or advice on this?

P.S anyone who hasnt changed their oil yet, make sure your other hand (the one that isnt holding the wrench) is poised ready to catch the washer, before it falls into a big greasy tub of dirty oil Embarassed it wasnt fun trying to find it and get it out

Hmm, it doesn't mention it in my Haynes manual either...but yeah, just follow the general settings for the thread diameter.

You don't wanna over-tighten the bolt lest it breaks (not pleasant at all), and obviously it doesn't want to be too loose lest you want to lubricate the road with Castrol GPS Smile

I think my zx6 was 35ish.

55 should be fine.

Wasn't the washer over the sump plug Confused
When undoing sump lugs I usually undo it the last bit by hand, pushing up as I do it, this way the oil is trapped unitl it's completley undone then whit it away.... okay you get a bit of oil on your hand but not nearly as much and you don't cover your tools in it Smile

I'm guesing MC City did that to mine... it welded the washer to the nut.

I did it a bit further and knackered the sump thread.

Hi

FZ750 is 15Nm for the oil filter houseing and 43Nm for the oil drain bolt

To keep your halfs fairly healthy get some of those thin latex rubber gloves. Cost at most £5 for a box of 100, and saw some at Donnington for £10 for 5 boxes of 100

All the best

Keith

Agrees with Kev

Plenty of bikes you cannot get a torque wrench anywhere near the sump plug anyway.

I'm a car mechanic and I been doin sump nuts up for years using a spanner until they go tight, even in my apprenticeship, nowhere did they mention torque settings.

Unless you r a butcher then sump nuts should only be hand/spanner tight.

You gotta consider what they r designed to do

A sump nut is designed to come off and on lots of times and only holds oil in a sump, not much pressure or load on that really!

fair point, but im not interested in doin things half heartedly (sp) its the way i am, if there is a manual for something i'll read it, if there is a torque setting i'll use it, im not exactly short of time as a mechanic in a bike shop may be, so i'll do things by the book, till i get a feel/confidence for what im doing, then i can go about bodging things Smile

yes, but having no clue as to what to expect when removing the sump plug, i unscrewed it bout half way with a ratchet, then oil started pissing out everywhere it could (hot oil at that) in theory the tray should have been under the bike at this point, but i didnt engage that thought process before hand Razz so i whipped the tray under and undid the rest of the bolt by hand (with haste) the sump was tight and the washer was obviously fairly comfortable where it was, i went to get a paper towel to dry the sump plug a bit, then remembered there should be a washer, felt around the sump, and there was nothing there

i was faced with a black tub of oil and a missing washer Smile

one last question, the manual mentioned smearing some fresh oil round the rubber seal, faced with three possible rubber seals i smeared them all, what is the purpose of this?

and i remember reading you should submerge the new oil filter in clean oil before installing it (i didnt) is there a reason for this? and should i have done that?

All the best
