Cleaning the Carb

Can i use a standard carburetter cleaner(Spray can) to clean a standard Honda cg carb?. is it a case of just removing the filter etc and spraying into the air intake pipe while the engine is running.

If you ant to clean it propperly you'll need to take the carb off..*

I'd imagine if its a solvent (which it will be) spraying it into the engine will stop the petrol/oil lubricating as it shoudl = scrape crunch... shat...

Wouldn't suggest it.. (appart form the fact its probably not going to clean anything anyway really)

If its REDEX then yes you take the filter off and squirt fsome in while its fast idleing.



*You'll need a manual, provided all the screws come out ok then its really easy, nothing to it just dont bend/loose anything or adjust anything as it might be a git to put back to the right setings.

Unless it NEEDS cleaning then your probably better of leaveing it be tbh.

A decoker/ engine treatment agent like STP or Redex you can just dribble through the carburettor with the airbox off and engine running. A standard carburettor cleaner is really for using when the carb is off the bike, and probably in bits.

The CG carb is a piece of piss to strip and clean anyway, just make sure you keep track of where everything goes, and don't lose anything. You can see if the jets are clear by eye when fully disassembled, and Stinkwheel's suggestion of butane lighter refill cans should work well for clearing jets if needs be. A hot solution of Swarfega will clean anything you put into it; a toothbrush and some kitchen roll are useful. I'd set aside a couple of hours early one Saturday afternoon to do it.

Redex in the petrol is useless. Redex straight through the carburettor inlet will decoke the engine pretty convincingly, though I've given little thought to the other possible consequences. I haven't had any problems with CG carburettors other than mucky floatbowls. The problems I had with mine (spluttering under any significant throttle, pinking and loss of power) were coking up due to excessive oil burning. Cleaning the plug, changing the oil and tipping some Redex into the carb fixed it.
