Car Trouble - Please Help Me!!

Evening all.

Right. I own a 2.0i Honda Prelude. It wouldn't start the other day, so I got it towed to Lookers Honda. They phoned my dad today (I was at work) and told me that it needs a new distributor, and at the next MOT it's going to fail because the exhaust manifold is cracked. I have been quoted £400 for the distributor fitted, and £300 for the exhaust manifold fitted, does this seem a little expensive?

This will be for genuine Honda parts obviously, is there anyway I can get aftermarket parts or anything that anyone knows of?

I know absolutely nothing about cars, but it just seems very expensive that's all! Hope someone can help me, I know a few people on here like Keith know a fair whack about cars.

£400 for a dizzy!!! Does it use gold for contacts or summin!!!

I swear a dizzy isn't that expensive and def isn't super hard to fit, I'd do a bit more checking around before shelling out that kinda dosh!

including labour and for OE parts those prices do not surprise me. Suspect the manifold might be a pig to remove.

However doing the work yourself with 2nd hand parts (and there are plenty of decent breakers around, check the autotrader for one who specialises in Hondas) you can probably knock 75% off the bill.

Even £50 sounds a bit much for a dizzy 2nd hand (although probably horendous new) and that should be easy to fit. Maybe a bit of effort to time up (or maybe very easy, depends if on that car the ignition timing is controlled by the dizzy).

Thats probabally right for Honda parts. The dizzy on Hondas are rather average to do. It could be that you can just replace the 'points' or 'brushes' very cheap. the manifold can be removed easier that some cars but the nuts or bolts could be a problem with rust e.c.t.

For aftermarket cheaper parts plus fitting. Try going to a local garage who may use bosch or something simillar.

I thought the contents of dizzys on modern cars were very simple affairs, just a rotor arm? Not much that can break.

I would be tempted to just replace the arm and cap before fitting a whole distributor as you will have to set it up properly so the plugs fire at the correct time on the correct cylinder. Besides, with a second hand dizzy it is probably best to shove on a new arm and cap anyway.

Hey,

Almost half of that quote will be for labour charge! Your best bet is to take it to a small garage, I reckon you would get it for more that half the price of that quote. Labouring charge at any main dealer is major money.

Small garges would be the way to go i suggest.

a honda dizzy is about £350, it contains the coil and other sensors for the ECU and no seperate parts are available except cap and rotor; get a second hand one along with a manifold save yourself a shed load ;o))
but how much will they charge you for diagnosing the problem? :o(
