as my 7 is off the road i have been doing some maitaince on her, one of todays tasks was to clean the front brake pistons, and fecking hell did they need doing! anyway all was going well until i got to the last two pistons to clean, they wheren't budging so blocked off the other 4 and one moved but unfortionatly it has brought a bit of the dust seal with it and now it won't go back in, and the other one is still not budging, tried to G clamp the one sticking out back in and the G-clamp snapped! Shocked
so it looks as though i am going to have to drain the whole system and get the piston out and replace the dust + fluid seals on the two dodgy pistons. but how do i get the bloody pistons out without getting stuff covered in brake fluid?
Cheers

plan A: making a jig like this and applying compressed air to the thread from the brake line, the holes to the other side of the caliper would be sealed, and the other pistons woud stay in due to them being blocked by the wood and the rubber. the bad piston would hopefully move under the pressure and come out, what do you recon?

Just did this with a set of ZX9 calipers.

Pretty much did as you are doing you just need an air gun with a rubber nose.

G clamp the caliper half down to a solid surface, I used my bike bench. Having a piston fly out at high speed can be VERY VERY painful.

Was thinking of doing another little article on it if I get the time.

cool, looks the way forward was going to change the fluid at some point anyway, good excuse to get braided lines! Laughing

I use my track pump with an old car valve cut down to do this. Screw the old car valve into the banjo bolt hole and attach the track pump to the valve end. I cna get up to 180 PSI with this and it's shifted every piston I've ever had to do. Mind you, a recent one I did I had to loosen the G clamp to lower the pressure, pump it back to 180 PSI and then tighten the G-clamp to up the pressure to about 200 PSI. I wrap the caliper in a thick rag and the pistons don't go anywhere.

Cheers

cheers for that Grim, but i took the caliper to a good garage i know and it turns out they have got a Motorbike Brake Piston Removing Tool, it had the stuck pistons out in a flash, all FOC think i am going to go back there to borrow it for 5 min to get all the pistons (12) out and give the caliper + seals a good clean and check over

White Noise,
I'm glad you got it sorted but I assume you had to split the calipers to get that particular tool to work? My method doesn't require splitting the calipers, which is something I view as a last resort.

Cheers

Hi

Wonder where I can buy that tool. Their stockists do not seem to list it (they mainly seem to be car related companies).

All the best

yeah i did spilt the calipers and its not such a mare of a job only four bolts, just got to be careful not to loose the rubber seals between the caliper halfs and put the bolts to the right torque when you do them up, TBH in my case spliting them saved a lot of hassle as got the rest of the pistons out in 10 mins in the garage. but each to there own, as long as it doesn't involve mole grips! Rolling Eyes
if i was going to be doing a lot of calipers then i would definatly get that tool! Thumbs Up
