I have just been for my second driving lesson with an instructor. I have had a few with my dad and Lucky but I decided it was time I got a move on and did something about it. I am doing really good the instructor is impressed that it is only my second lesson I am quite proud of myself and I suppose I do enjoy it when I know I am driving well. But the thing is now I have started I feel as if I might as well carry on and get it out the way with. I am not really interested in learning to "Drive" I dont have the urge to jump in a car and drive to work, it doesnt feel right. For some reason I feel much more comfortable on a bike than in a car. I feel more in control and safer. But I know that I HAVE to get a car liscence as bikes arent always suitable for all weather and situations and cars are just more convenient. But at the moment it feels like a chore. I just want it passed so I have it out the way and so its there if i ever need it. But at the moment I just want to get on with enjoying my bike.
In a strange way I suppose I fell like society is forcing me into passing my driving test because EVERYONE has to drive and own a car and BIKES arent as reliable and blah blah blah....
For those of you who do have a driving liscence how many lessons did it take for you to pass I know everyone is different but another thing that puts me off is it just seems to take forever and a day to pass it. Too much time and too much money.
Everyone should own a bike and it should be summer all year round. ____________________ '' A better ride than bucephalus '' |

i'm having car lessons, i've had about 20 and now i'm booking in for my test. This is a few too many, but i'm learning how to do everything really well so i can pass first time and know how to drive well, not just enough to pass my test.
oh and my parents are paying for it all, so no pressure on me |

Im in the same boat at the moment, 'cept Ive not had any proper lessons yet. Ive only had about 5 hours in a car but I seem to be doing really well. I can do hill starts(but not too confident yet) and reverse/parallel parks. Not tried reversing round a corner yet, but than cant be too hard, can it?
One reason for me getting my license is that hopefully there will be a £17k + car job in it for me! ____________________ BCF: Be yourself, just don't be an arse. |

Oh yeah I forgot about that one. I start my new job at the vets on monday and they say I may need to do a bit of driving so they would want me to try and pass my test ASAP. Whats wrong with them all im sure a dog with a broken leg would love to be strapped to the back of an NSR. ____________________ '' A better ride than bucephalus '' |

I had about 10 lessons, but that was because they were free (my ex' dad was a driving instructor!)
You shouldn't need that many having road sense etc, I was 17 having never been in control of a vehicle before. You may as well pass your test, it won't be hard work, and when you do you'll be able to do a lot more. I have a car and a bike (for my sins) and the car is useful and practical. Also having my car last year meant I got to drive all sorts of exciting vehicles at my work (lorries, vans, the bosses MX5... etc ect!) ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

As soon as my ban is up I'm going to look into getting my car test done. I'm not actually going to get a car at any point in the near future, but its nice to have the licence there just in case it is ever needed ____________________ -Zimma |

Car license is useful, if not just to be able to drive a van with your bike in the back, or to get minimotos about
From what I gather, quite a lot of jobs will ask for a full driving license
10 lessons? thats not very many at all |

I had 10 lessons to pass my car test.
5 days to pass my HGV class 1
4 lessons to pass my bike test
ALL FIRST TIME
oh how the world hates a smart arse...
Seriously, I think having experience of driving a variety of vehicles can majorly extend your life. You are so vulnerable when riding a bike that you need to anticipate what other pillocks who have never ridden a bike and have no idea what they are capable of will do next.
If only everyone could experience driving a 60 foot 40 ton articulated veeeehicle - believe me you would give them a load more respect when you see the stupid things other road users do.
And no, I'm not alorry driver any more - It was how I funded my way through Uni a few years back.... better than flipping burgers or stacking shelves.
In short - go for it and good luck. Mr Lucky is probably one of the best instructors for practising with. Remember I have known him for hundreds of years and have spent some of the scariest moments of my life in cars with him. He's not called Lucky for nothing.. ____________________ 187.3bhp = 201mph |

Ok then but just because it makes sense doesnt mean to say I like it.
Mr C I would be too scared to have any more driving lessons with Mr Lucky incase he decided to get out and sit on the roof or the bumper tell me again how you are both still alive? Oh the stories you both have.
My driving instructor says about 30 lessons but he will know more after 10. I think i am at an advantage because I spend alot of time in a car as a passanger and I do have some road sense so to speak. I am keeping my fingers crossed it wont take me too long. I really just need the practise. I could do with having a cheap old car and going out as much as I can with someone. *HINT* Mr Lucky.
Its the test bit that puts me off as I know what I was like on my CBT I was doing great but as soon as he told me it was the last time round the block to decide if i get the certificate I went to pot. I just think I would be so nervous in a test that I would just forget everything I have already learned and crack up at the wheel.
I looked into doing the weeks course for the driving test but it was going to cost something like £450 I might be impatient but im not that desperate just yet. ____________________ '' A better ride than bucephalus '' |

I think they say that to quite a lot of people on thier CBT's. I got told if i didnt stop dumping the clutch i would fail.
A cheap car, and your still gonna have to pay a nice chunk for insurance |

Jimbo that is not a question you should ever ask a lady
Miss L. did he tell you about the time we jumped his dad's maxi 1750 about 70 feet over a blind crest ... that was hilarious
His roof surfing antics are legendary .. 9 miles on the roof of P's car at between 60 & 70 mph then piling into the pub like nothing was unusual .. I'm convinced he'd be a good instructor
My point is .. when you have driven/ridden the way we have for as long as we have (and survived) .. we must be doing something right ____________________ 187.3bhp = 201mph |

Back to the original question...
I think i had about 10 car lessons (it was a long time ago!), and racked up loads of practice time inbetween lessons. But that was getting road sense as well, cos it was my first vehicle. But as you haven't actually racked up much road time on your bike yet, I think it's fair to say you'd need about the same - get the lessons to learn the test-passing technique and then practice time to work on what you learnt and generally get comfortable with driving.
Once someone's got some bike time under their belt, they could easily half that - then all they need is to get used to the differences and learn your manouvres and you'd be sorted. Same the other way round really, too.
Glad to see some of you are doing the car deed... it's not like you have to buy a car, but being able to drive is bloody useful (see last Saturday for details) |

Miss L. his dad rarely, if ever, knew we were out in it...
or the seetibeezergluxis (ask him )
I wasn't with him when he decided to turn himself in, but I was with him when he decided that a police dog van didn't count as a real police car so he could overtake it at 60+ in a 30 limit. hoho how we laughed ____________________ 187.3bhp = 201mph |
