I'm looking at a ZXR400, it is in good condition, but has 42000 miles, will it be OK? I want it to be more reliable than the RS50 I have got, but it doesn't have to tour europe!

I just want to make sure that it is likely to be fine, as I don't want to be spending loads on it!

Thanks,
Matt

Check what work it has had done on the engine, if any. If none, then I would expect it to need some very shortly. From what I;ve read on the net, all the zxr engines go BOOM after 30k miles. Just how far after 30k, that's entirely dependant on how it's been used.

It's had a new rectifier, battery and clutch.

Also has a sports exhaust.

If nothing else has been done then what is likely to need doing, and what will this cost at a garage?

Thanks,
Matt

If they are Kawasaki Jap 4 strokes they are going to be quite reliable if it has been looked after, even with 42k miles?

What might go wrong/need doing and how much would it cost?

Camchain might snap, the top end and pistons are probably very worn by that sort of mileage.

I wouldn't touch a ZXR with that many miles ...

They are prone to camchain problems, head gasket problems etc.. who knows if it's been done ?? It usually goes around 30k miles AFAIK.. but in reality it could be at any time.. more miles the more chance of a problem.

There are plenty more ZXR's about with lower mileage so I'd say to be patient and keep looking out for one.

You haven't said how much it is, if it's £500 then maybe. Otherwise why bother, pay the same and get a lower mileage one. As for camchains snapping, it's not quite that dramatic, it'd be slapping and rattling or a while before it snaps, and it's more likely to slip causing topend damage before it snaps.

Here it is:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4579128793&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

The reason I'm interested is it will only cost me £100 to get it delivered to my house. I have been looking at others but most of them seem too far away.

Check weather its kms or miles. 42000 kms is only about 25000 miles I think.

Personally I won't be touching anything with above 10,000 on the clock when I buy, I don't like the idea of expensive engine repairs. To me when you buy a bike, you get what you pay for, pure and simple. Is it me or was he over the odds, asking for more than £900?

I also think £900 would be too much for that bike with 42k miles on the clock, but it's a sports 400 which inflates its price. Kind of like 125s, there's a limited number of bikes and lots of young riders wanting them, which is why people will pay more than they would if it was a bigger bike in the same age/condition.

One thing that could happen from riding a bike with loose camchains is that little shards of metal will be knocked off the side of the engine by the chains slapping, get into the oil, and damage the engine probably seizing it.

Have a look for an old engine from a breaker, or check the price of pattern parts. A few weekends' work on that, and you could have a mechanically minted bike. And you'll know the innards for when/if something does go wrong. But if you're lazy like me, then don't touch it.

There is no need to buy one with over 40k as there are plenty of them with 15k if you be patient.

It's probably 42k kms. I'm sure if it has been looked after it'll be fine but theres other things to worry about when it's done that kind of milage, like rear shocks, front discs etc

But you can pickup ones with alot less milage quite cheaply too

P.S. Get a Honda Very Happy Surprised Laughing Wink

jap motors are pretty bullet proof so long as its nbeen looked after you will be ok - i think £900 for that bike was a decent deal

if you want reliabilty, best bet is to go with a bog standard Honda,
mine has done 70K, (its been in the family from new, 0 miles )
and we have never had a problem with the engine whatsoever, its bombproof, and it lives on the red line!

Try being pillion on my VFR, not boring.

I don’t see spending more money putting bits on my bike exciting.
