A 125, if you get a hack like a CG you can sell it for what you paid, a 400 probably would make too much power for a new rider to control in the ice/wet/etc.

Winter hacks are generally bikes you don't mind too much dropping and a dime a dozen. Like a CG.

If you can afford it, do the test. The range of bikes you will then be able to afford improves hugely, and you don't have to rag them to get the best from them. You also get rid of the hideous red and white sails by doing that, which is worth the cost on its own. You can still get a winter hack, but it won't need to be a CG type.

Get the test passed in that case. 125 two strokes live on high revs and engine rebuilds aren't especially uncommon. They're not as unreliable as the scare stories would have you believe (given good enough servicing), but they're not in the same league as something like a CB1 (Honda 400) or similar.

Bear in mind that the smaller the engine capacity, the more it will have been thrashed, and most small bikes have been neglected in the servicing department as they're mostly owned by clueless 17 yr olds. Neutral

I would say do your full test, then look for a cheapish scrambler for winter. The reason i say do your full test is so you have more choice on what bike you get.

Then if it snows you can have a bit of fun in the snow Laughing
