Hi,

My valve caps have broken on my tyres, the top bit has push off leaving just the plastic thread... Are they important? Can I get a couple from a garage? (Mate told me to get em from a car, but I live in Liverpool and dont fancy a kicking!)

Also, the bike feels a bike nervous, and when I change gear, after about 30 seconds on that gear it 'clicks', throwing me forwards a bit, so tomorrow I am going to pump my tyres up and adjust the chain, Is there anywhere I can get air? Are there pumps at garages? Is it free?

You've had the bike since July and you've never put air in the tyres?

Get valve caps from Halfords. Get a footpump while you're there.

Yup, pumps at garages, yup, free, be careful though as they are quite quick.

EDIT - If you live reasonably close to a garage, I wouldn't bother getting a foot pump, why spend money on something you can get for free. (although in that situation I'd get a tyre puncture repair kit)

Valve caps are reasonably important yes. Probably stops any damage happening to the valve or any muck getting stuck inside them. Just get some off your parents/mates car.

Oh yeah, I've put air in the tyres, used a mates footpump though that creaked so loud it woke the neighbours up Smile

I've got a tyre pressure gauge though so I can take that to the garage with me! Might even go tonight on a mini mission!

you don't really need it, you just set the pressure on the machine, put the hose on and it will inflate the tyre to that pressure, sure the accuracy +/- 1 PSI or something like that

Laughing Easily impressed, are you from Scotland or something? Razz

When I had the moped it never occurred to me to put air in the tyres (I was young and naive Shocked ) but after about 8 months of riding I finally did it, they were at half the pressure they should have been at! Shocked Was absolutely horrified, no wonder the handling felt so dodgy! It felt 10 times better after that.

I wish I could pump HOT JAM into my tyres, but alas, I can't.

Amazing what a bit of air can do. You're meant to check you tyres as part of your pre-ride check. I don't but you're meant to. I do it when I feel it's getting a little squelchy.

Footpumps are cheap, as is a can of WD40 if it squeeks. Get a keyring pressure gauge from halfords too - only a couple of quid. Valve covers also stop sudden deflations through the valve I've read somewhere. I'm guessing that'd only be if it got damaged by a stray stone or something so a cover would help prevent that.

You would think the forecourt air pumps would be accurate but I have yet to find one within accurate to within 3psi let alone + or -1 so I would always check with a good gauge.

No point taking a risk with the rubber if you are going to try and keep the bike rubber side down.

Not taking the piss mate, as I have been through this myself Embarassed

The one at the Shell near me has a button on it that you have to press to get it all started. I stood there for a good 10 minutes trying all manner of things, before I went and complained to the bloke in the shop. He came out, and pressed the button. All was good from then on, but I did have to apologise a bit......
