Hope the subject makes sense...I've been wondering:

A few people on here have had offs recently, often on bikes that are under 5 years old, that have been owned for a short time and which cost a fair bit.

Most importantly you're all alive to tell the story Thumbs Up but isn't it financially crippling?

How do you afford the bike and insurance? Do you make sure you're fully comp (I have 3 NCB and still choose TPFT)?

If not, what happens financially when you stack the bike?

I can't figure out how the economics work, are there BCFers that are in loads of debt just because of bikes? What's wrong with owning a cheaper/older bike?

I don't like finance/hire purchase as a personal opinion but paying for a bike that you don't even have must be the worst!

My first bike was an NSR125 - got a loan to pay for it, paid the insurance straight out and paid for it to be fixed everytime the engine fucked up.

Probably people save a little cash to one side or have very understanding parents

I think it's because some people need instant gratification, this together with cheap and easy finance means that many people will live beyond their means. Personally I agree with you, why have a really expensive new bike whilst you are starting out, then crash it and still have to pay for it.

I guess this is why you see a lot of street-fighters around. When I started biking I got a bank loan to buy my first big bike, but in those days you need to have a deposit of about 30%. The bike was S/H and I learnt some mechanics lessons by home servicing and when the cam chain snapped and I had to repair it myself.

Hi

Suspect some are living with parents but doing reasonably high paying jobs, hence a large disposable income (and one hell of a shock to the system when they finally move out), and others are putting themselves into serious future debt problems.

Mind you, Ebay helps.

All the best

Keith

I wonder if a rider who hasn't paid for his bike is more likely to crash it, because they haven't had to work for it... Thinking

No doubt about it, living with the folks is a damn sight cheaper than living on your own two feet. Still, no matter how nice your Fireblade looks on the drive girls can't sleep over on it, and friends can't get drunk in it!

I'm surprised parents are forking out for bike though...my folks would have never helped me, my 'hobby' = my money to fund it.

Different ways of helping. Nominal rent, no bill, etc, all help.

It is easy to be rich in the short term. Just thinking about it and with 2 credit cards I have something stupid like £15k of immediatly accessable funds, and I suspect there are plenty of people on here with a lot more than that. I could easily spend that money (mmm, 650 Daytona and a Canon 1DS mk2, still with some left over), but longer term would be screwed over by the min payments (say 3%, thats £450 a month). Finacial suicide is easy.

If you want to get really frightened (or possibly realise that you are not as dodgy with money as you could be) then watch the "Bank of Mum & Dad".

All the best

Keith

Good point, back when I lived at home I was only charged £130 a month rent all in, definitely helped me save to buy my first bike.

Know exactly what you mean about 'potential income' to, I think I've got about 23k available to me on credit cards. Sometimes the idea of getting some big cash advances out and using them to buy a small place in S.Africa is very tempting (very light penalties for speeding, long empty roads and warm tarmac all year round)...

credit card wise, if your smart enough, i know people who take out a car at 0% for a year, then pay it off with another 0% and so on for years until they have paid off the origional debt.

I didn't pay for my bike but have done so much to it I would kill myself if I crashed (if the crash didn't do it already... Eh? Shocked)

I think quite a few of the 'kids' are going to look back in ten years time and curse all the money they wasted.
