Warm Glow In The Rain

Coming out from work tonight in the hammering rain, I noticed a girl who rides a scoot/ped trying to start the thing with no success. It usually takes me a couple of minutes to sort my bag out - cargo net, gloves, earplugs, helmet etc. so I thought I'd check and see if I could help.

The poor lass had been trying to start it for 10 minutes while everyone else was buggering off home in their cars and she was by now in tears.

It wasn't looking good, as I know Jack Schitt about peds, but the battery seemed good so I took the engine cover off, checked the spark plug lead and pushed it back into place with a squirt of WD-40 for good measure. "Try it now."

Success! Put the bits back together and off she rode all happy and thankful. I got home half an hour late, soaked and feeling just a bit smug about it all.

In the grand scheme of things, it's less than nothing, but two people's day got marginally better because of it.

So to anyone who doesn't stop for bikers by the side of the road because they don't think they can help: do it anyway - you never know...

Same kind of thing happened to me today...

Was going to get my bike out from the college compound... this poor girl was standing in the gateway with her ped blocking the door... she said sorry and let me go past until i noticed she looked a bit confused... she told me she had locked her keys under the seat...

Now me, knowing a large amount of nothing about peds thought her only hope is to get a spare key... offered her a lift to pick it up but she told me she didnt have one.

"Bugger" i thought, didnt have a clue what to do, so said sorry and walked on to my bike... i had just finished getting ready, and looked over to see her rumaging through her bag and obviously clueless as to what to do...

I felt realy bad and decided to walk on over and see if there was anything at all i could do. She seemed happy that i was coming back to try and help her... i took a little look and it turns out the hinge of her seat is on the other side to the lock, and only a screw head bolt... i asked her if it was ok for me to "hack away a bit" at her bike, she said she didnt care about it, just wanted to get home.

Went to my bike and rumaged through my under-seat, and found a driver... took out the hinge and managed to force the seat up enough to fit my arm under... retrieved her keys for her and re-fitted the hinge. She seemed extremely happy and pleased at me so i also got a warm feeling inside Only got 1 long scratch up my arm, which is now healing very quickly

The question about it being a 16 year old male on a ped? I dont know... my mate threw this at me straight after aswel... couldnt answer it then either. Im guessing a 16 year old lad on a ped, wouldnt be so excited to receive help... most around college wouldnt, so no. I suppose i wouldnt have gone to the lengths that i did for this girl, although i would never walk past a fallen / stranded biker. Ever.

I think most people would offer to help someone if they were having trouble with their bike, and it's always nice if someone else stops by and asks if you need help when your having bike trouble yourself, even if you don't need help.
The last time i helped someone was when a guy crashed his Thundercat into the central reservation near a roundabout, after hitting the kerb. He was fine, but his bike lost a mirror and and indicator, and bent the brake pedal. The worst thing was that he had only brought the bike 2days before, and it had got a new dream machine paintjob, in the black/yellow American Yamaha race colours. Poor bloke must have been gutted!
