Before any calls me an idiot, i understand what CG125s are meant for and i know they do their job perfectly, great little workhorses they are!

However thinking about this i was wondering if there was a racing class for them as such or anything similar? Little ideas for tuning, after some one has shown me cheap nitrous kits for mini motos i am seriously tempted to buy a CG125 hack and just try to give it more go!

Look at the kits, i mean this could be some serious looney little fun Smile

waiting for someone to correct me but...

Is not one of the major problems with nitrous that you have to increase the fuel delivery at the same time as injecting the nitrous? Otherwise all you are doing is running the engine very, very lean, which is likely to make the kind of noise you don't want. That kit doesn't seem to have anything in it to do that (unless there's something explosive in the wee cylinders).

And I think CG125 racing is a great idea, see also 2CV racing. Cheap cost-of-entry and limited benefits from spending a fortune on tuning.

Ahem Embarassed

If you think it will work go for it, but at the end of the day if it damages the engine you only have your self to blame Wink

You could put nos on a cg. Little point. It doesn't work so well on singles anyway.

Bore out the engine, put on a race can, skim the head, air filter, carb, turbo it and play with the gearing.

I say you could get the CG pretty fast with that.

It's only a bit of fun idea, cheap ****s and giggles. A guy on another forum i am a member on bought a kit and put it on his vespa, he said it was quite funny, just thought it's good for laughs, not sure about the richness factor, just have to run the bike a little richer to start with, it's not alot of nitrous that just goes through.

I've had the idea of CG racing for ages, just not sure wether it would take off!

Racing standard CG125s, that would be fun.

Cheap and easy, just make a track more suited to slow bikes and away you go.

Why does all racing end up so bloody expensive lol?

What's the cheapest bike racing to get into? I'm not talking about professional leagues or anything, just a bit of Sunday fun, turn up and race.

EDIT
Had a little idea to add. On top gear, they do a little competition where they buy a type of car for less than say 1500 quid and then put it through some tests. Might be fun to do that and use bikes that are older than a certain year or lower than a certain cc. Would love to do a 125cc 4t endurance ride from Manchester to way up north, camp for a night or two, head back. Would cost next to nothing, no race fees, get to play with the engines etc and do some on the road repairs maybe. Guess it could be a bit dangerous if something goes bang...

Yeah if there is such a thing as a CG125 Race series, then brilliant! If not then maybe we should invent one, and with some luck it will become a national british commuter bike championship! It could be open to any 125cc 4stroke 125, and say any 100cc two stroke, to make the class a bit more interesting and provide variation, and the chance to get an eligable machine fairly cheaply, as the only problem with CG's is that they hold their value quite well, and a good 10yr old one is still worth over £500 easy.
What a fun way to start racing, we could keep the rules simple and allow for a bit of tuning which would make things even more interesting and competitive.

Exactly, i have wanted to do this for ages, imagine cgs with no mudguards, trying to improve the brakes + tyres phwoar the power you could have, it'd be awesome Cool. Had the idea ages, do you recon we could do something about it?

Main problem would be insurance and finding a place to 'race'.

By insurance I mean if someone comes off and breaks their leg and blames it on someone while on a private field/track, all hell could let loose. Personally I wouldn't claim or blame or anything, not my style.

Anyways, been thinking about it. Tarmac tracks might be a bad idea at first. Pushing the bikes at around 60/70 for a laugh and having a bump could make a mess. Just playing on a solid field would limit the speeds a bit because of the surface. Anyone got ideas for venues though? I'm in the northwest and would be prepared to travel a bit.

There isn't a class that races CGs. To make it decent you want to allow some modifications, which would probably put off a lot that might be intested.

Some mag put nitous on a cg a few years ago and took it on a track. Blew up before the end of the first lap.

Off road stuff can be cheap ish.

For tarmac-track racing, moped mayhem can be done fairly cheaply, as can minimotos.

If you're looking at 'real' bikes, MZs can be done cheaply, but you need to spend some money if you want to be properly competitive.
Yamaha past masters (TZR250/RD350) can be pretty cheap - pick up a fairly sorted bike for under £1k and doesn't need too much work through the season.

Expect entry fees to be around at least £100 a weekend at the very low end of the scale. A bit less for a single day.

If you start getting really cheap, you're losing most of the advantages that racing offers.
Trackdays are usually a better bet until you're fairly fast - at least for the riding experience.

Cheers G Thumbs Up .

I've got my car driving test coming up, as soon as I pass that I'll be using a car for most of my normal transport needs. Was planning on keeping the GPZ as a toy. Just about had the funds to keep both running. That got stolen so now I'm just looking for a bike for a bit of fun really.

I'm not interested in any serious competitive racing, just a few mates being a bit daft. If the bike gets broken, that's a big part of the fun. Don't want to spend a fortune though and 100 quid for a weekend is just too much for me.

Ideally, I'd meet a few guys, go for breakfast somewhere on the bikes. Head off to somewhere like a field and setup our own race/tests. Main problem with the organising would be the location, I'm no good with laws and whatnot, and I don't really like trespassing.

I'd be all up for people modifying their 125s, adds to the laugh factor. As long as things dont get over stupid (dangerous).

Ok I'll shut up, getting a bit excited, will think it's a stupid idea in the morning, will never work lol.

Thumbs Up

Have a look at something like slow pete's enduro's.

Unfortunately road-track racing is going to be expensive. You /have/ to have organisation etc incase someone gets hurt, it all costs.

Why not do some trackdays?
These should be 'just a bit of fun' - but people often get competitive with mates.

Minimotos are definitely worth a look and are quite near to big-bike racing in many ways.

Prehaps the 125 on a budget ride idea could be quite run, 4squeak only or limited cc 2squeak so all bikes are evenly matched, under so much money and then go on a very big ride! Petrol would cost next to nothing, 100 miles to a gallon? Yes please!

If you start to make it competitive on roads you are getting into very iffy grounds. If some gets hurt or busted the organiser is likely to be deep in the smelly stuff.

That's a bit of a shame, as it's road racing on proper race circuits that appeals to me most, but im not fully aware of the rules and regulations for racing, and how to get started assuming that there is a cheap racing class. The MZ series sounds like fun, but there aint that many cheap MZ's around, and £1000 for a competitive bike is a bit much for some people to start with i would think. Also what kind of cost is involved in getting a race license etc?
I know there is no CG type class, but i think that some people that want a very cheap and fairly slow and unintimidating introduction to organised racing would like some sort of small bike bike class, as ive heard that the MZ250's are 100mph machines, and thats a bit much for a total track beginner surely, especially if they want to enter a race class, and not just ride a few trackdays, which is something very different to competitive racing.

100mph isn't fast really on the tracks you're on.

There is a good reason for entering a few trackdays first. Well many good reasons.

First, a competitive race is not an at all good way to get to know how to ride on track. It is a good start to serious injury and death, even if we're talking slower speeds.

The problems comes because you can't really have 'slightly competitive racing' - some will always want to be /properly/ competitive. Trackdays are a much better bet for those that don't want serious competition.
Some clubs are a lot slower than others at the back of the pack however.

Trackdays give a much better track experience with more track tiem for less money. Main thing missing is the /serious/ competition.

Basically, motorsport is expensive, the bigger you get, the more you pay. Sadly nothing that can be done about it.

At the last lydden round there was someone on a very stock looking MZ

To get an ACU race licence you now need to do a race school.
Bemsee ran one this year that cost £125. This includes a theory test that would normally be £50 and a days instructed track time.
£30 for ACU membership and £30 for club membership.

Have a look on the YPM forum for cheap bikes.
Or buy an old MZ/YPM cheaply and you can do the work yourself, saving a fair bit if you pick suspension carefully.
It's partly this work that adds the value over a stock bike.

Really don't dismiss minimotos just because they are small - they are also relateively cheap, though not as cheap as the chinese ones would suggest. The racing is still like 'real' racing and just as exciting. The machines are a lot more basic and the smaller capacities are much easier and cheaper to keep maintained.
Practice is also much cheaper as is other expenses.

This /is/ the cheap introduction people want I suspect. Some places will hire bikes for a race, so you don't need to splash out.
However you still want to try and get some practice in - with any racing there is very little point just turning up and going without prior experince. Because in the end you are getting a lot less than if you went to a track/practice day.

It could be interesting with disc brakes, inters, suspension mods and rear sets on go kart tracks.

However by the time you've gone to the trouble of modding it so it's not really annoying to ride, you might as well gone for something a bit better in the first place.

The roadtrip idea is like the paris dakar challenge that i can't remember the name of, you got to buy a vehicle for so much, spend so much on making sure it goes and then get from point a to point b!

Racing CG125s could be a laugh!

would be great todo for a laugh, probly better everyone turning up at said trackday on set days an racing rather than organising your own event.

or gumball3000 style everyone meet in london on cg's first person in glasgow wins,

ps this could also be done on big bikes, just like gumball, start up are own underground street racing with check points an crazy speeds, with check points at wel knows biker stops.,, ohk im thining to much now but u get the idea.

two words, exsplains my madness. "cannonball run"
