Just had a look here. Looks like motorcycles are exempt from mandatory insurance.

However given the state's love of law suits and sueing people, it would probably be highly advisable.

I believe that not all states require compulsory insurance in the same form we have in the UK, but even where it is not mandatory, often it is purchased for piece of mind (does anyone really want to go toe to toe with a Yankee lawyer?).

Slightly OT: In some states, you can ride without a helmet provided you have at least $x thousand worth of medical insurance (and you are over 18). Rolling Eyes
