Help!!

Everyone, I was just wondering how I would go about altering the carb, so that a little more fuel gets through? The thing is the airbox now lets in more air and the right mix of the two isn't present. So if there's any way it can be done, I would like to know. It is an AM6 engine (According to Dom_) Smile

Also, I would like to know how to go about checking if the pump from the coolant tank to the engine is working, I don't think it is. There has been a coolant change at the weekend, but the coolant didn't actually cool down the engine, if anything it made it worse.

Any comments appreciated Karma Karma will be rewarded for good answers Razz

Don't know if this counts as a good answer:

Find out for sure what kind of engine you have, and buy a manual for it.

It'll tell you how to remove, dismantle and re-assemble your carbs with a new, bigger main jet. Sometimes there's an adjustment you can make to the jet already in the carb, but the whole lot will still need to come apart and you will need the manual to tell you how to set it up.

It will explain the correct type and concentration of coolant you need as well as how to get the correct amount of it into the engine without filling it with air locks. I'm guessing here but I suspect it'll tell you that there is no pump between the tank you filled and the engine.

Also makes fascinating bedtime reading.

fin.

Did you bleed all the air out of the cooling system? For increasing the fuel flow you'll need to upjet, i.e. put a larger main jet in. Be warned though, messing with the jetting can make a mess if its not done right.

What bike is it? what mods have you done to it to require upjetting?

FWIW Haynes do a manual dedicated to the different type of carbs, how they're put together, how they work and obviousy how to fix/adjust. Try haynes.co.uk if you're interested (and then look if it's on eBay cheaper).

My Dad drilled holes in the airbox which seems to have unbalanced the air : fuel ratio. It needs choking to get it moving so I think I need to allow more petrol in, just wondered if there was anyway of doing it myself.

As for bleeding the air, no, I didn't do that and I think the airlock this has created is causing mass overheating, how do I get rid of airlock?

I will try get my mitts on a manual, but I just wanted to see if there was any help I could get from expert BCFers first.

Cheers Thumbs Up Karma

EDIT: Sorry guys, karma system is messed up here so I'll rate you as soon as possible Smile

There will be a fuel/air mixture screw on the carb. It will probably be the smaller one, to one side as apposed to a larger central one which is the idle screw. Turning it in should allow less air/more fuel (need someone to check that) and you need to play til its abit better.

Oh and the bike is a motohispania 50cc isnt it?

The cooling will probably be similar to my senda I think. Remove the hose that attaches to the cylinder and remove the thermostat. Fill the cylinder and hoses below it going to the water pump up with coolant. Squeeze the hoses to remove any traped air. Replace the thermostat and hose. Stand the bike up straight and fill the coolant tank, again squeeze all the hoses to make sure of no traped air. And I think thats about it.

It's really hard to help without knowing the bike you have - each one's different, you know!

Here's what I'd suggest you do in your position:

1. Take the drill off your dad.
2. Get Some Gaffer tape and thick sheet plastic, see if you can seal up the holes in the airbox.
3. Does the bike have a radiator cap? Try filling it through that. Then park it on a slope (front wheel upwards) and run it with the cap off for a couple of minutes.
4. There may be some air bleed points on the engine, but you'll need the manual to tell you.
5. Don't even think about re-jetting the bike.

fin.

EDIT:

6. Do NOT start twidling the air screw on the carb - at best you'll mask a hideous problem. At worst...

Ah it's what I like to hear. Aprilia spend millions on airbox tecnology just to have it screwed up by someone with a drill.

Buy a new airbox and start again.

Hate to seem rude but drilling holes in airbox isn't big or clever as it removes the nice still air supply an engine needs. this is an important thing and means you retain your low and mid and don't have problems in cross winds.

If you want to keep the holey air box you need to get the bike on a CO2 analyser to set up the pilot circuit and then start playing with needle position and main jets.

Wasn't my fault I told him not to!!

It's not an Aprilia lol, I'll see what I can do about fixing up the holes though. They are actually inside the airbox, under the foam stuff, not drilled into the side.

Well whatever, you know what I mean. Beat him around the head with something and order a new airbox on his credit card while he's passed out on the floor.

I know Wink

The parts for my bike are damn expensive :quiet: Because they have to be imported from sunny Spain. A front panel cost £35!!!

And it didn't fit right!!!

Does now though Very Happy I'll price up a new airbox, if not I'll bodge it Very Happy
