Both can touch 70, but would need wind or a hill to do so probably.

The SR has better brakes but a worse riding position.

I had the SR125 on my CBT up to 60, got there pretty easy i thought, if you tinker with the gearing it'll probably struggle to 70.

The honda CG would be slightly quicker.

Be lucky to hit an indicated 70.

For most bikes I would definitely agree.

However if you were to be regularly using such a bike on a road with a 70 limit where people regularly go a lot faster, it starts to become a much more important factor on a low speed bike.

Had you considered something like a NS125F or NS125R?

um... Look around a bit. No offense to anyone on hear with a cg/sr etc. But they seem dross TBH. The usual 'But they are great as cheap commuters and learner school bikes' arguement is the only thing that keeps them alive, but there are more fun things to be had for less money (that brake, go, and even corner).

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2003-MZ-RT-125-BLUE-Learner-Legal_W0QQitemZ4581866131QQcategoryZ9931QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Like that for example. Same 4-valve, dohc motor as my bike with the same 6 speed box, but in a different frame. Should cruise relatively comfortably at 70 or so.

For me the cg125 is loads better than the sr125. With me, a lot of bikes are ok and some are good and some are bad. The cg125 is good, and the sr125 is bad. It is not a case of the cg125 being slightly better, its a lot better.

Although as already mentioned, it usually comes with front drum brake where sr125 usualy had front disc brake. I think it may be possible to get later cg125's with disc brakes.

Even with front drum brake, its still better than the sr125, you just need to brake earlier.

I recommend trying them out as most places that you do your cbt with have both.

I had an 04 CG. It did close to 75 on a sunny day, with a slope Wink

Good bike. I wish I could have kept that as well as my current FZR Thumbs Up

Also with all the chrome you need to look after it or it turns to rust.

My CG would sit at an indicated 60 pretty much everywhere, up hill, head winds etc, though it would in good conditions reach 65, and ive seen 75mph indicated on a different CG on a long downhill dual track, probably had a decent tailwind as well.
Id have no prob with riding the CG on a fairly quiet Motorway or dual carridgeway, but on busy A-roads and very busy 2 lane routes with mainly high speed traffic, it would be a little bit out of it's depth.

PostPosted: 12:36 - 13 Oct 2005    Post subject: cg or rs cont .... Reply with quote

well thats a healthy response... seems like a busy forum. Whats been said has been helpful, and it boils down to his for me:

Although I would like a faster 125 for the money, I can't find one- and not any with as good a rep for reliability as these. The ebay link posted was for £1200, wheras I've been looking at 600 or 700 quid bikes. I'll upgrade later when more cash and full license.

I prefer the styling and riding position of the rs but it seems slower and not quite as well put together. However insurance is about £100 cheaper for the year on the rs than the cg. That said, although the bikes I'm looking at are about the same price, the honda is 1999, and the yammie is 1996. Seems like the honda will hold its resale value a bit better.

Basically then, i would like to go for the one that looks at least a bit like a motorbike- the rs. But prudence says I go for the cg.....with a bit of tuning

As I said, you gotta look around. The link I posted was to a 2003 bike, that would be a similar price to a 2003 cg or sr, however my bike cost me £600 on 53 plate, hundred quid later it was back on the road.

8316 too right gs 125's rule Very Happy

cheap and easy to run / insure etc

mines older than yours (1985) but they are still a nice bike to learn on,

i say get a gs as they are quite cheap to buy around 500 - 600 so within your budget, and you can get them with a headlight fairing.

Heres a picture of my gs

I had a little Yamaha SR125 (1999) as my first bike and would recommend them. Mine taught me all the basics from doing my CBT right up to passing my DAS. It didn't fail me until the day I passed the test when someone tried to take it and smashed the lock Shocked. Hardly it's fault though and it wasn't expensive to get a new lock fitted. Another plus was when I came to part exchange it - I got all my money back.

Here's a picture of her - was nearly 2 years ago now!:

I wouldn't think there is much between the CG and the SR. Both are Japanese, both are built to a high standard and both produce more or less the same power. The SR's actually built in Japan not Brazil where the CG is made, but for these bike's I doubt it would make any difference, they are not exactly high tech pieces of machinery. Either way they are built to last and both will take all the abuse you can throw at them and some Thumbs Up

This guy has clearly not ridden a cg. They are not the same. The cg is great. The sr isnt great even if its the only bike you have ridden.

I had the cg up the the maximum speed (huuuuge hill full throttle feet on pillion pegs), i can 100% gaurentee IF you could get it to that speed easyly you woudn't want to..

(interestingly older jap cg's apparently are a little quicker on account of the carbs, + stinkwheel pointed out brazilian cg's will run off alcohol, probably with no modification)

I can see disc brakes being a major advantage, haveing been there and done that, i'd have got an nsr, especially after a year of rideing (did my test after a year of cg based fun) but for getting on the road for cheap and staying there cg is still my fave Smile

Had my first crash on my old SR. Good bike though, liked the riding position. Was more of a means to and end though, just had it to learn so I could get a bigger bike.

Looking back, it doesn't stand out very well so you don't get seen that easily. The brakes were pretty poor but it was an old version with a front drum brake. The comfortable seat and riding position made up for the lack of speed.
