I am going to look at a '98 r1 with 20,000 miles.
I dont know much about bikes. At this mileage, is it likely its gonna need some work done valve clearances or something ?

Im not too worried if its just slightly down on what it should be but is there things that will need doing on it at that mileage ? If I am asking for what things have been done, what should i ask ?

I guess when were tyres, sprockets, chain last replaced. what else ?

before anyone says its too big for a novice, id like to say I will be the r1 rider who gets overtaken by 125's and will be taking it easy

Just ask the usual, has it got FSH, if not, at what intervals was servicing done, if done by the owner, do they have all the receipts.

Valve clearances on most bikes I have read of are recommended to be checked at roughly 16,000-20,000 miles so they should have been done already. Whether they require it or not is a different matter.

Nice fancy bike like an r1. Just make sure the fairings aren't hiding any gremlins.

Not sure on cost of that but have you ridden an early R1?

The gearbox sucks which is the reason I sold my 2000 model. But apart from that it's a great bike.

I'd suggest a steering damper, but for some people the thought of the bike biting back makes the ride more interesting.

Check the frame alignment, R1's bend the headstock pretty easily if they have had a few heavy landings from a bad wheelies.

Check oil service and which oil (if they know) has been used, 10-40w is best, a 5-40w is too thin and can burn out the water pump.

Wheel bearings will probably need checking by now, and also the suspension may need a once over; the R1 is too soft on the front for the average weight rider.

Depends on price really vs what needs doing.

I'd rate the early R1's as an animal bike Twisted Evil , it has that old 'I'm gonna kick your arse' feel to it when ridden fast.

You only really miss something when it's actually gone...I miss my R1.... Sad

Hi

Not sure on the R1, but some Yamaha bikes have valve clearance services at up to 28000 miles.

Doing the valves is not that cheap. Think with most Yamahas the cams have to come out and so there is a fair amount of labour involved.

All the best

Keith

R1 valve service is at 24k miles. for a full major service your looing at an all day job

for just the valves your looing at about 4 hours labour

chain and sprockets etc really dont come into it unless they need changing.

service is vavles, plugs, filter, coolant, oil.
Brakes get serviced and suspention linkages
carbs balanced

ermm cant think of anything else off the top of my head

hope that helps

I was hardly putting the r1 through its paces but it felt great. Gearbox wasnt too bad for me. I had no idea how to check the headstock and Im not even sure I know what it is.

I fell in love in a big way but Im no longer sure I can justify £2500 on a bike. The girlfriend went balistic on the idea of a 3rd bike even before I mentioned how much it was. Watching me count out the money for the security drove her nuts. The good side of this is, if I sold the rs125 and never told her how much a new bike really cost she'd probably be fine after a week. She will always have more of a problem with 4 cheap bikes than one expensive one. "Why dont you get a car ?" " I wouldnt use it and I dont want one."

Its true I should probably spend the money on the house.

At a guess I dont think there is much wrong with the bike I saw but it needs a back tyre. I dont mind forking out on consumables and four hours labour sounds ok.

It took me 8 months to find a mechanic capable of doing decent work on an rs125 so I hope I'll find someone quicker than that for the next bike. Im getting a bit chatty for workshop section Embarassed
