Anyone know how you change the ownership of a bike with the Smartwater guys? You get a card if you're the first owner, but I'm the third and the insurance spods want proof that it's got SW.

If they're so smart, why don't they give you a couple of cards to pass on when you sell the bike Rolling Eyes

I gave him all the documentation etc that came with it when it was bought and applied - I'll have a look tommorow as all the documentation is at work (as he was sorting his insurance etc out at work today-he's just done his CBT and as such busting to get out Smile )

so I shall have a look for you tommorow - no problems

With Alphadot I just phoned up the company to tell them the owner of the bike had changed. They then sent me out a new certificate and I sent that to the insurance company.

"What happens if I want to dispose of something I have marked?

You should declare to the new owner that the item is forensically marked with your SmartWater code. This alone may be perfectly acceptable if the next owner knows you and you know them. However, it is better if the new owner puts on their own SmartWater mark. Should the item subsequently be sent for analysis, two 'fingerprints' will be detected and two names will show up on the database. The police will then be able to determine which of the two names has lost the item. The important thing is to provide the police with a starting point, and an 'audit trail', instead of them having no clue whatsoever as to ownership or where to begin looking. "

Cunning! They want you to buy a new smartwater kit, thieving bastards.

I'm gonna ring them tomorrow, now that I've finally found a number Confused

I had smartwater on my NSR. You just have a certificate to say it was done correctly. It's registered to the original owners name with the bike details etc. It does not matter that it's the original owners name. Like datatag , it's still ok.

Do you not have the smartwater certificate?.

All i've got is a sticker on the back of my NSR which says Smartwater, so i'm assuming it has it. But i've got no paper work for Smartwater.

Nope. Some tool's lost it along the way.

Thing is, I was the first owner with my previous bike, and they give you a card to fill in. Which you send away. Only cos I used my brain and photocopied it first did I have any proof that it was fitted, which I passed on when I sold it.

Smartwater is some shit sprayed all over everything on the bike, from what honda told me. How you could fit a new load of this is beyond me... Confused

All I got with mine was a photocopy of the certifacte, and that was it Confused

It comes in little bottles and you can paint it on. Then, under analysis, the forensics dudes would get 2 signatures instead of one, and would reconcile it against the DVLA records to show that you were the current owner and not whoever registered it the first time around.

Sounds like a scam to keep selling £50 Smartwater kits if you ask me Confused

Isn't there something with Smartwater whereby you have to keep paying installments to have your data kept on the database?

When I was looking at security for the CBR I researched it, decided it was too expensive and went for datatagging....

I'm not sure, but I think the original dealer who fitter the smartwater pays the fees, so it would presumably be them you have to contact?

Alternatively, you could send Dodd for a walk (that's a Telford number, one of the industrial estates over his end methinks starting on the 2...), and he can go and beat them into changing the details!

I never even declared SmartWater on my NSR insurance. It's something like that technicality that they'd fuck you over on if you were to claim. I tried insurance quotes with SmartWater and without it, and it really is a con, there was about £8 difference and for all the hassle is it's easier just to pay £8 more.

That's exactly what I was starting to think. Reckon I'll ring the insurers and tell them to ignore it - it's there as a deterrent and would technically help me find the bits, but it's not worth risking a non-payout over.
