I have bought a Honda cb750k (not sure if it's 1971 or 1972). I've noticed oil on the floor at the kickstand. I gather this bike has a self lubricating chain? That is where all the oil & gunk seems to be, around the place close to the chain sprocket. Is there something that should keep this oil from accumulating in this area? I appreciate your advice.

Never heard of one of those mate. You've either got an automatic chain oiler fitted somewhere - Scottoiler or the like - or someone has overlubed the chain and it's just dripping off .................

or the gearbox oil seal or change shaft oil seal behind the sprocket is weeping. Give it a good clean up and then monitor it for a while. Also keep an eye on the engine oil level.

Check the small oil seal,on the gear change lever shaft.
It used to be a problem on later twin cam 750+900 Hondas

Thanks for your response. I'll check the seals, I think you are correct. It is something around the sprocket area. The Honda service manual does claim this is a self lubricating chain, but I don't think that is where this leak is coming from since I have started thinking about your suggestions.

Hi only guessing but it might be called self lubricating because its a sealed chain. Pretty common now but in the good old days.....

The early K1 had a chain lube system, if you remove the front sprocket cover you'll see a strange looking adjuster in the centre of the output shaft, by adjusting this you can vary the amount of oil 'leaking' onto the chain, bear in mind this is your engine oil so you'll have to keep an eye on the oil tank level.

I enjoyed the head gasket remark. I have been looking in my repair manuals since you recommended checking the seals. The shift lever seal was mentioned & the gearbox oil seal. Are either of these a major chore to check or replace?

Whats a sealed chain?

Taken from https://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcnuts/chain.html

So, for the foreseeable future we're stuck with our old chains. The last big step in chain development was in the eighties with the mass introduction of the O-ring sealed chain. Those little rubber rings have solved what was the chain maker's biggest headache for many years: Loss of lubricant. The load bearing pins and bushings that enable a chain to bend over a sprocket have precious little oil to keep them happy. As if that wasn't enough, high centrifugal forces that occur when the chain turns around the drive sprocket throws away the oil. "The only reason for chain wear is the loss of lubricant" says Longoni. The advent of the O-ring chain enabled the chain to keep its oil inside and stay lubricated were it counts for long periods.

So an o-ring chain as opposed to a sealed chain like on say an MZ.

Different terminologies cause me endless confusion.

Thumbs Up

To replace the lever shaft seal, take off sprocket cover, locate seal, and remove. If you can get Honda replacement, all the better. If memory serves me right, when I did it last(Cb750FA) local bearing stockist, didn,t stock exact size,so used the next size down (ID) 1/2 mm difference i think,Never suffered the leak again.
