Flip-up plates - Legal???

I've seen a few places advertizing 'plate flippers' basically a motor atached to your number plate. When a switch is activated the number plate is flipped so at an angle its unreadable.

Im guessing these are a little like radar jammers, legal to own but not to use?

Is that the case? Surely having one fitted is no problem as the offence is more to do with 'displaying' a plate???

Do you really think having one of them on a road legal bike on the road will be legal Thinking

Go to the DVLA website, check out the legal number plates section. Having a hinge or similar is not legal on your numberplate Smile

I have however seen devices that flip the whole entire plate and lay it flat, i.e. horizontal with the undertray. This was a simple device rigged up with a choke cable off a Mk2 mini Laughing

I should imagine that they are 'for show use only' or some such. I wonder if you could get done for perverting the course of justice if you used on going through a speed camera?

Yep, thats what i've seen.

The hinge I believe is actually on a plate which the number plate then bolts to so no modification would be needed for the number plate itself.

Hi

I have heard of someone being spotted parked up with such a plate and the police waiting for them to set off and pulling them over. Think the story was they got done for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Might not be true though.

well if you went through a camera with it flipped up they wont know who you are anyway! Still, it would be a good idea, I'm sure you could get it rigged to the throttle cable so if you fullthrottled it, the plate would flip up.

i have seen one of these its like a little braket that works like your brake. you hit the switch and it pulls on the wire and flips the plate......i would get one if i new where the sold them Confused Mr. Green
