Need some advice on a Yamaha xj600

Ok, Of tomorow to see a "G" plate yamaha xj600. Freind from work wanting rid of it. Has been sitting idle for a year, no tax,mot.

Informed forks are gubbed and will need 2 new tyres, so if i decide to take it for a winter project rebuild. What should i pay for it?
Rest of the bike im told is intact and has not been abused. bike has been in a dry enviroment and looked after..

Need some advice on what i should pay and what to look out for on this type i.e. is there any common faults on them. Yea its an old bike but if worthy of a new life il give it a go.

Upgrade from the CG are we?

I think the XJ is the Diversion... Nice little bikes from what I've heard but can be quite bland... Should be a nice big bike to upgrade from a CG to though... I'm contemplating a CBR600F

What is wrong with the forks? Just seals gone, or has the chrome pitted?

At that age I presume it is the old XJ600 rather than the Diversion.

Hi Toby, Well Keeping the CG until next year, decided to spend some time doing what i like best rebuilding cars and bikes before going for the test. Forks i have no idea as we all know a bike can be made out to be a FAB! until you see it . With more faults not worth fixing.

What should i expect to pay saying the forks and tyres req replaced and a general tidy up?

Il get a piccy up tomorow night and list the visible faults before i commit

Hi

Probably £120~£150 for a pair of tyres (bit of a guess). Fork seals are cheap (say £10 for the seals, plus some oil) and should be easy enough to do yourself (or even quite cheap to get a dealer to do them after you just take the forks out). If the forks are pitted then around £150 for pattern replacements with seals.

Fair chance that the chain might be shot as well, depending on how well it was lubed before being put away.

old xj's are worth about 400 quid in running order, probably only worth 100 quid if it needs work, he'd be hard pushed to get any more than that,(i got a 1995 with 17,000 on the clock for 700) a pair of tyres for 70 80 quid, fork stantions pitted and need replacing, and then you might find more wrong with it, clutch baskets have a habbit of rattling which is just a location pin that can be replaced with a 5.5mil drill cut down to size, engines are pretty tuff and can do good miles if looked after, exhausts usually rot, even on the newere models, handling is good, brakes are a bit naff, goodridge sorts them out a bit, or put a 900 front end on, they tend to be a bit ratly at top end, but not really a problem, a bit heavy on juice than most 600's, but a sturdy bike

Well of i went then got a good old soaking, right in the middle of a thunderstorm....Anyway Decided to have it Full history inc mots and a lot better than i thought.

How much? I picked up a pretty much mint one. (Rear wheel bearings were shagged). For 425 quid. Makes about 70ishbhp and is a damn good bike. Read www.gaz-racing.co.uk there's a section on my old XJ. I've got the manuals on CD somewhere if you want them.
