I've just been quoted £300 for a fitted Meta alarm+mobilizer. This seems a little crazy... I know it has to be guaranteed+fitted properly, but I can't do it myself? Also, are alarmed disc locks any good, as I might go for one of them instead, although I really want the immobilizer. Has anyone got any advice?

Ebay does cheap chinese alarms, never heard of anyone having a problem with it. I've got one of them, looked at the wiring diagram and thought again.

Why do you want it, insurance or protection? If proptection, then get a big chain and lock.

£300 for an insurance approved alarm is good.

You could install it yourself if you're good with electrics. However, you could fuck it up badly, and it won't be recognised by your insurance company without an installation certificate from an approved installer.

yeah, I have a fuck off big lock, but I park it just outside my window, so having an alarm would be a great excuse to beat the crap out of some little thief. Not really, but it would ease the mind a little. My friend parked his car outside his window, literally, and all his stuff went, people are so cheeky. I would park it by my bed if I could, no joking! I had a look at the wiring and soldering needed, and am thinking again... May just beef it up with as many locks as I can afford and just hope for it!

A datatool system 3 is an Cat 1 alarm and immobiliser and it retails at about £199. I think they're one of, if not the best alarm on the market for the price.

Save your money just get a flashing led and some wire about £1.00 and fit it yourself.
Just think if you're pushing it in a corner and the immobilizer cuts your engine.........OUCH!!

Never had it happen to me or heard of it happening to anyone, so far there have been two attempts at nicking my bike, both times the wailing alarm had neighbours shouting out of the window (words to the effect of " F**k off you thieving shits! Shocked ") before I got out of bed!

Should point out that it's also bolted to the floor with a very big chain and lock though Very Happy , that probably stopped it getting lifted immediately!!!

I would thoroughly recommend an Evo 3, never had it drain the battery and its only failing is that it can go off if the bike isn't properly settled on its stand, better too sensitive than not enough so IMO Mr. Green

My last one was absolutely shite. The alarm (for unknown reasons) decided to go off on a roundabout, I was wondering what the noise was, staring at the car behind, until I realised half a mile later that it was me! The motion sensor had gone awol, so if you saw some guy driving a bike going crazy, that was me.

Worst of all, listen to this. I was checking out a place to get it fixed around my area. I had parked on a main street, padlocked as I didn't want to carry it around (the alarm still going off) I jump on again, forgetting to remove the padlock as everyone stares at me and I get really panicy, forget completely about the chain. Basically, the chain gets firmly wrapped around the back wheel, alarm going off as I try and pull out onto the main road. And guess what, a fed car was right behind me waving me out, me looking like the most bait guy ever, I wave them on and they piss off with a nod. That's what worries me (not as much as me driving off with chain+alarm still in operation!)
