Bike To Bike Intercoms!

Been looking for a Bike To Bike intercom at a cheap price! Seen a couple on Ebay but seem to be getting out bidden!

Does any body know anywere or any website that sells good one with a pretty good range to them?

Looking to spend around £50ish!

Ain't got a clue how they work. I have heard that the cheap ones arn't worth the money though.
I was watching a 2nd had set of good ones on Ebay last year, it went for over £100.

Well we seen one on Ebay that had a radius of 14 miles toking distance where both could tok to each other! Thats the kinda one im looking for.

2 radios/intercoms, 2 headsets, and little extras likere chargable batteries and things like that.

Got a feeling we could be asking for a bit much for the price limit

Yeah, I think so.

Going off topic, I remember my flat mate had a CB radio and we were sufring the waves one night. Heard a conversation between two total neds in springburn (we were in maryhill). We joined in their conversation, putting on a NED accent and saying we lived up in one of the blocks there.

Aaaaah...so much fun with cb radio's.

Ahem...

Back on topic - Get a ride magazine, or any past ones, and see if they have any reviews on the handsets you are interested in.

The kit MarJay's got was pretty cheap (Maplin special I think) and it was actually the mics that let it down - wind got to them and you couldn't make out what the other person was saying above 40mph or so. Reckon throat mics would have gone some way to solving that.

Robby had one in the car and we could hear him fine when riding at a reasonable rate, but just couldn't reply with anything except wind noise.

the radios alone can cost £50 for cheapo ones.

for a decent autocom setup, for bike-bike, you're looking at £300 or more..

not sure about the other brands of equal quality out there.. but it doesn't matter if other bike use different intercoms, as long as the radios are all compatible.

As mentioned, Autocom is way ahead of the rest www.autocom.co.uk but is not cheap.

all you need is here basicly, lots of choices.
I have 2 x motorola "Talkabout TA200's"
and 2 x earpice + mike things, unfortunately ive noticed that one of them is the wrong type so not too chuffed lol.
you can have vox (always on) or push to talk,.

you can buy the propper bike set up things but having bought them before i wouldnt recomend them

I tried the cheap route and found that you get what you pay for!!!

The Autocom is expensive but works! The cheaper 'lash ups' get ruined by their inability to deal with wind/induction/exhaust noise and I've not seen one that works well at speeds above about 40 mph.

Save your pennies until you can buy some good equipment I reckon

Glad this subject was brought up. The hubby and I have been looking around at these as what with me being a new rider thought it would be a good idea, safe and all that. Anyway the ones my instructors use are good, all work ok, I think they said they got the handsets at Argos and the accessories at Maplins. From looking around I would say dont get too cheap (under £40) as remember you get what you pay for. Am gonna check out with the instructor again this Saturday in detail which ones it is they use. Also you have to decide which ones are best for you ie, press to talk or voice activated (vox I believe), correct me if I am wrong though wont you.

If you buy el cheapo, e.g. Maplins, you will get el cheapo performance. I have had friends who have tried this and it really is not worth it. They may be ok for instruction, but then the speeds they are used at are low. Go over 40 and they are useless. You really need a quality microphone. Watch the demo on the www.autocom.co.uk site and you will see what I mean.

And I would say make sure you get a set up with Vox and push to talk. I have the Autocom pro sport that works as vox for pillion and PTT for bike to bike. Otherwise everything you say can be heard by anyone on the same frequency!

Also seen Starcom as well, looks very similar to Autocom from the website.

Anyone have any experience with this brand?


Another website indicates that they (Starcom) are releasing a new model at the NEC, a lot smaller than the current models.


Both Autocom & Starcom look the business & I will probably be getting a Rider/Pillion set from one of them. Would like to know peoples opinions on both these manufacturers if possible.

I've also tried the maplins route. Absolutely useless. Could hear nothing above 40mph

starcom are pretty good too....

definatley on a par with autocom.

really not much to separate them in terms of performance.

Autocom is a little more established, and more widely available.

Both the Autocom and the Starcom kit are very good. The thing to watch out for is the radio you buy as that will kill either systems performance.

Look at getting a decent (read: more that 100 quid) radio straight off the bat, don't bother with the Maplins 2 Motorola radios for 40 quid rubbish as they are exactly that - rubbish. The iCom radios are good (I use one), but around 150 new, same sort of price for the Kenwood.

I can highly recommend the Autocom's.

As has already been said, they are not cheap but the work really well. The noise cancellling mics are excellent. If you are going bike to bike, the radio's are really important.. the cheapo ones really are a load of crap.. I didn't think it would make much difference, but ended up junking them and getting some Kenwood's.

I've been using the kit for a few years now and upgraded from battery powered to the bike powered pro7. It's better not having to worry about batteries and the transmission seems clearer too?!

They are great for music and phone also. Nice stereo headphones that fit into your helmet.

Definately recommended

Don't think you can save money and go for the cheap ones, you will only be dissapointed and will want to upgrade anyway. Just save a bit more money and buy the Autocom/Kenwood combo!
