Easiest way other than a dyno check is the plug colour, black and sooty looking=rich..very pale, burnt/glazed=lean. Those are the extremes, in reality might not be too easy to tell, the bike can run fairly happily leaning towards one or the other.

i cant work out if my bike running to lean or too rich, im not very engine mined need some pointers, unforunatly i dont have the tools to do a plug chop and these nc30s are a right bitch to work on

Get it on a dyno with an exhaust gas analyser. Will tell you straight away.

One a 2-stroke your bike will splutter just before the powerband if it's running rich, not sure if it's the same on a 4stroke? is the bike spluttering at all?

Why you worried about the jetting anyway? have you altered the air intake/exhaust?

it splutters between 5-7000 revs while changing up gears where you release the throttle and got back on or if i accelerate from a higher gear at slower speeds its def around the 5-7000 mark

hmm could be ?. fuck taking those apart myself right bitch of a job but i was told they were given a good blast but they didnt seem too bad the prob does seem to occur more the hotter the bike is ?

On choke the bike is starved of air making it run richer and it should run ok, when you knock the choke off it relies upon a pilot jet (tickover / slow running) and then a main jet, if this main jet is restricted then it will hessitate.

would redex and use optimax or bp ultimate for a while help clear the jets not technaly minded enough to take the carb apart ? what u said does sound familiar in my sitation

redex helped by zxr400 out...it made the flat spot better and just made the bike feel like it was running better....

problem sorted after all that it was the bloody sub air filter replaced it with some packing foam and hey presto sorted no more carb hunting or flatspot

One thing that will show sometimes if the bike is running rich, it will not hot start very well. I had this problem on the KLX and it was due to a clogged filter and the fuel/air mixture screw had been moved.
