Getting a chain off the front sprocket?

My chain snapped tonight on my way home from a friends house. It's stuck around the front sprocket. It's not tangled, just laying around the sprocket as it normally would. How would i get it of? If i put the bike in 1st gear with a little revs and let the clutch out a little, will it turn the sprocket and release the chain?

Won't the sprocket just turn freely in neutral? I really wouln't advise sticking your hands anywhere near the drive mechanism with the engine running Smile

I'd have said leaving it in neutral (with the engine switched off) and just unravelling it would have been your best bet.
