Please excuse my French, but...

This is a rant, and I'm fucking annoyed

I've just spent THREE hours writing an in-depth reply to a PM I received from another honest and well-established member of BCF.

When I clicked on 'Post Reply' I was presented with the BCF logon screen again. Didn't know why I had to do this (I was already logged on anyway), but I duly completed the logon.

Did my PM reply get posted? Did it fuck Middle Finger

Could I get back to my reply message? Could I fuck Middle Finger

Yes, 'The Old Geeza' is fucking angry - as you may have guessed.

Why the fuck does the 'Back' button only allow you to return to your original, blank reply screen, rather than previewing what you've bloody typed.

Yeh, yeh, yeh. So you're all going to say 'I always copy what I've typed before I post a reply'. But why the hell should we have to do that ?

Surely if the BCF service fucks up there should be a way of going back to the screen where you typed your reply? Even my Internet Banking allows that Exclamation

IMO there's a bug in the BCF system and it needs ironing out, smartish!!!

If the page refreshes (IE you have to log back in) then anything in the form previous is cleared... If you just use the back and forwards buttons without refreshing then it's preserved.

First, as usual;
You want more, you pay for more. Loads of forums have severly restricted service and lots of ads if you don't pay (max of ten PMs and more ads on visordown, for a start).*

Secondly, the back 'bug' is a bug in the software you are using.
Choose software that repopulates forms when you click back (such as firefox) and you won't need to worry.
Be a corporate whore and pander to M$ crap design and get your just deserts Smile.


*General rant, not directed at old geesa:
A lot of people seem to expect everything for computers to be free. Someone always has to be pay, be it advertisers, the people downloading or the people hosting. That's life, so don't complain the few times people do provide very good services for free off their own backs.

Good info, G, But surely ANY website should make itself compatible with the Operating System people are running, without having to use a third-party plug-in? If I choose to use IE then so be it. That's the system I like and I'm not going to change. Furthermore, IE is the standard used on over 90% of the PC's in the world, so why should I have to use someone else's software simply because a certain website will not comply with what the majority of the world uses?

Further, I'm not asking for anything more than anyone else. I signed up to BCF like everyone else. It was a free chat forum, like thousands of others on the web. So, you're telling me that if I want something more than I would expect - such as at least posting my replies to a PM - then I should pay extra for the privelage?

So, who do I pay my money to in order to ensure I get more on BCF ? Thereby ensuring I get the service I was hopeful of. I'd gladly pay what it costs in order to keep from being disconnected from BCF and losing my posts.

Either get into the habbit of copying and pasting your longs posts (like i did when i was using IE) or start using Firefox, where it will save what you have typed in a situation like that Thumbs Up

Please stop all this talk of paying for BCF, I really don't want to get landed with a diskspace bill or bandwidth bill!! Razz

Using IE is your choice, if you choose to use it then you get all its wonderful features like forgettting what was typed in a form when going back a page. If you want to use IE then so be it.

have to agree with TOG as it is fecking annoying when it happens, and when it just wipes you think feck to it and can't be arsed to reply. i have started to write long posts in word then copy it across to BCF, i alway thought that it was a fact of the website you where brousing and not the web program you where using, so is the way to get round this problem to use firefox or motzilla?

If I write an epic, I hit copy before submitting. On any website that uses a submission form. Tis just a good habit to be in.

The website *is* compatible with Microsoft products - this is the way all web browsers used to be. It just happens that there are now some which you can get which have bothered to deal with this little problem.

Yes, it's frustrating when it happens. But it's an internet issue, not a BCF issue specifically.

Hmm...

When I'm typing a reply on the BCF forum, I believe I'm doing it on a BCF form (since it's their form I'm typing into). When I post my reply, I believe BCF are handling my reply (since it's their button I've clicked on). When it doesn't work, I believe it's a problem with BCF (since it's their server that's cocked up). So, why should I blame what I perceive to be a problem with the BCF site on the Internet in general ?

It complies fine.
The not keeping posted data is the way Internet Explorer works.
It was a well known failing of internet explorer.
If you like it, keep it, if not, don't.
Sometimes IE does save the data, but not always and not usually when the page failed.

A significant amount of the internet is run on non-microsoft systems.
Not really the issue though, you choose your software and have to accept the issues the software you choose has.

Most of the other bike forums of this sort of capacity like this one in the UK both ask for small donations from contributors and often have the sort of problems this site does.

Suspect a grand a month or so would probably buy a better server.
I don't know the specific details of how much it costs at the moment, but I do know the reason for the occasional server issues is related to the bills being paid.

You have to realise that IE has never been completely compliant with the HTTP protocol, whereas browsers such as Firefox (I still call it Mozilla) are much more compliant.

However one thing that may be worth doing is dropping an e-mail to Microsoft's IE development team and suggesting it, you never no IE10 may implement it.

Because it is not confined to BCF alone. I've had it happen to me on many websites, hosted on many platforms. It's just one of those things.
