Hi, i have just bought a mini DV camera so i can record on board videos on the bike, but i cannot find how to transfer recordings from the DV tape to the computer. I know it can be done using firewire, but does any one know how/if i can transfer the video from the tape to the SD or MMC card, or directly to the PC using USB.

Read the manual?

You won't be able to transfer it to the media card, you need to use a firewire or usb cable to connect the camera to the PC and capture the video. You should have got some software with the camera that will let you do that.

i have read the manual, i can transfer pictures from the card to the computer, but not videos from the DV tape, i read something about converting the DV analogue signals to Digital signals to transfer to computer, but i dont know if this can be dont with USB, as i havent got firewire.?

Just buy a firewire card, they're about a tenner.

USB can only be used if the camera is specifically designed to do so, doesn't sound like it was.

yea, you can only transfer DV via Firewire, USB doesn't have the required bandwidth.

USB2 has similar bandwidth to firewire

Very few cameras support it though, if it did it would certainly be supported.

Firewire is great, buy a card anyway. Smile

My camera lets you transfer via usb but I'm not keen as it encodes it to MPEG as it does it... I prefer raw AVI to play with.

Hi

PC World (and possibly a few places like Jessops) are doing a firewire card, cable and a copy of Studio 9 DV (video editing software) for about £25 I think. Pretty good price.

That's the newer version of firewire, 99.9% of things fitted with it are still 1394 which is 400Mbits/sec. So USB2 would be faster.

That's correct. USB2 is faster than firewire. The firewire figures quoted were for Firewire 800 but not many things support this.. yet!
