Could someone please tell me what is involved in fitting a new chain. My bike is around 20 miles from where i live because the chain snapped a few nights ago. I can't get anyone to recover the bike and i am going to buy a chain tomorrow and try to fit it myself because i want to get the bike home. What would i need apart from the chain? Is there a special tool?

Wait for some exact info to be given from one of the experienced members but my reckoning on it is you would need a chain breaking/rivetting tool (I have seen those all in one tools sold by motrax).

You would break the old chain and join the new one to the old one and lead it round the front sprocket and then take it off the old chain and join the ends on the new chain together.

Helps if it has a centre stand but I'm guessing your bike is a cbr600rr and doesn't.

Do you know if there is any front sprocket casing/engine damage that the broken chain caused? Can put a hole in anything if going at speed (had the same myself but thankfully it only broke the casing partially)

I don't think it has done any damage. My bike is an old Honda Cityfly. I just put the CBR there because it looks nice.
I wasn't going very fast at the time as i heard a crack just before it snapped and i slowed right down.

On an older bike it may have a split link. Bit of a problem that you can't check. I would personally still get a split link even if its just for the journey home simply because its easier to fit.

If the chain has a split like the pic above, use a screwdriver to split it, take the chain off and bin it. The first thing to do is move the rear wheel fully forward then take the new chain, pass it around the front sprocket then around the rear. Remove all un-needed links then put it together. Lastly adjust the rear wheel so the chain has correct amount of play then ride home. Check the chain when you get home because i guarentee you that it will have moved.

Also when fitting the chain you might have to remove the fairing so take tools for that.
