What is this backfiring malarkey ?

My GPZ gives it quite a bit of 'mis-firing' when I throttle back at high revs, but that seems normal to me, and sounds nothing like a 'backfire' blast. Just a normal out of sync 'phut-phut' sound.

But backfiring? Does this happen on acceleration, de-celeration or what? I've heard of bikers using the 'kill' switch to produce a 'backfire'. But under normal riding conditions ?

I look forward to hearing from higher authorities than me for an explanation Thumbs Up

So I have heard that if you ride along at about 5/6K rpm

Kill the switch, squirt the throttle and then hit switch back on you get a backfire.

Of course I have never tried this. and of course not around chavs.

Ahh, okay, so he wasn't trying to imitate me then Razz . First things first, check your spark plug. Give it a clean and place it back in. Secondly check your carbs and see if needles are clean.

Does the bike have an immobiliser?

I've had this problem when i had a my NRG ped 2 years ago, ride along and revs will die. Solution was to get a new battery. For now, check your spark plug, and if it's clean (or if you're just not bothered to check), put the battery on a trickle charger for about 10 hours if you don't have the intelligent chargers. Give that go. What bike do you have?

Doesn't work though, not that your missing that much.

The more posts you make does not mean it is more likely to be fixed. If the engine is rattling as you said in one of you many threads then there is something that needs seriously sorting. Get it to a garage and get it fixed. Do not ride it even if you can get it started if the engine is rattling.

worst case senario would be that youve knocked the crank out of sync, meaning you need a new one Thumbs Down we've got one in the shop at the minute that backfired going down a hill and it knocked the crank out of sync and it refused to start.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news

swf = south woodham ferrers?

I suspect a dodgy coil/HT lead/spark plug.

Back firing is fuel not being ignited in the cylinder and then igniting in the exhaust.

The reason it wouldn't ignite in the cylinder would be a lack of or very badly timed spark.

Which leads me to coil/plug or plug lead.

Although the other thing is incredibly wrong fueling, but that wouldn't just suddenly occur after not changing anything major.

If it was that recent then it seems to point to your problem, check the plug cap and lead if in doubt take them off and put them back on properly, double check you've got a good spark, that means the plug sparks when held to the barrel not some poor sap getting a shock from it Shocked .
Shouldn't be fuel related, backfiring means a load of unburnt fuel is being burnt at once as previously stated so the fuel was getting through just not being burnt at the right time by an intermittent spark.
