The owner of a localish pub whom used to run a hein gericke store said that a company policy is that you can ask them to clean your helmet for you.

Is this true?

Would love to walk into a hein gericke and say "polish my helmet darling"

Worth a shot, but they might polish your face for you instead!

You can ask them but it doesnt mean they will do it.

I could ask them to give them the contents of the till but unless I was appropriately threatening, I think they'd be inclined to say no.

An old woman at the bike show today polished my bike boots for free in an attempt to sell me some bike polish waterproofing wax. I didn mention that I didnt want to buy it until she had polished both

Ive had them a year and never polished them and they could easily go another year./

I have had many an argument with the folks on those stands. "Let me polish your boots for you."

"No thanks"
"but this stuff is really good."
"I don't care, they already have wax proofing agent on them."
"Go on, it's free."
"Yes, but it will remove the wax already on there"
"Ah, but this stuff is better"
"What, better than totally waterproof?"
"We have it on special offer, today only three pots for a tenner"
"*expletive deleted*"

They lost any chance of selling it to me at any point now or in the future when they continued after "No thanks."

Yes they are a little on the pushy side of things. It does get kind of irritating after a while. I have learnt that the definition of free is expensive.
