I'm going to chance it and hope this doesn't belong in the workshop category as it's just a general question, though I wouldn't be surprised if it gets moved!

I was just wondering how easy it was to take a bike apart if you weren't planning on putting it back together again? I might be able to get hold of a not-working bike (not sure what sort) and was thinking of breaking it to sell the parts but I don't know whether I would be able to.

I don't know much mechanically but I'm a fairly logical and practical person... think I'd manage it? And would it be worthwhile? (I guess I'd learn about how bikes are put together if nothing else!!)

Take it apart and not worry about reassembling it!!! That's easy, just undo every nut and bolt you can find until the sucker falls apart in front of you; then just sift through the bits for what you want to sell. Thumbs Up

Yeah Izzi, I reckon you could, no problem. Be worth finding a haynes manual or perhaps a workshop manual and use that as guidance. Taking stuff to bits is relatively easy.

Might need a hand/hoist getting the engine out and a paddock stand or two but it should be no problem. Thumbs Up

What sort of bike are we talking about here anyway? Smile It would be worthwhile, yes, not jsut in the sense that you'll probably learn from it but you say you're going to make some money from it too, so you're onto a winner there.

Just finding the time may be a problem. All to easily, bike projects are pushed to the back of the garage as most folk who start get fed up! Smile

Providing it's not some 30 yr old thing with rusted bolts everywhere i recon it would be possible to strip a bike down to the bare frame in about 2 hours.

As said, just undo every nut, bolt or screw you can see.

How will you describe what your selling?

I can see a long ebay list with,

For Sale: Silver bit that connected to the black pipe £34
For Sale: Black pipe, was connected to silver bit £4
For Sale: Finned metal bit, was next to Black pipe and Silver bit £6

I can see it now lol.

Sure, I'd go for it. Best way to learn is to have a go. Thumbs Up

thanks Smile

I don't know what bike it is yet, I was just talking to a friend who owns a garage about bikes, and he said he might be able to give me a bike to break up. I've looked for bike bits and pieces on ebay before so I figure I might try and sell bits on, but you're right the problem could be defining what the bits are in order to sell them! I'm thinking I may take a *lot* of digital photos as I go Laughing

Finding the time should be OK as currently I work shifts and don't have that many this month (if I can get hold of a bike soon). What I worry about is littering the house/garage with bits of bike and my parents not being too impressed!

Its piss easy to strip a bike down, putting it back together is harder though.

Hi

Just take your time and think logically (eg, don't just take out the swinging arm spindle without supporting the bike, and I do know people who have done this).

Fair chance that if you take pictures and post them then people can identify them for you.

As mentioned above, biggets problem with be seized bolts. Get some decent penetrating oil and use that on all the threads before you start.

All the best

Keith

I should have done this with my first ped after it was nicked and de-panneled. I could have easily got the £250 i paid for it back in parts. It shouldn't be that hard, most are easy to disassemble in a metter of a day's work. If in doubt, buy a haynes manual.
